As a blogger, you should be concerned with your bounce rate. If visitors land on your blog and leave from the same page they came to, you’re going to have a high bounce rate. A lower bounce rate is something to strive for, so follow these tips to make your blog “sticky” and encourage your visitors to spend more time on your website.

  1. Use a simple navigation menu: Don’t make navigating your website hard for your visitors. Make your navigation menu clearly accessible and use link text that clearly tells visitors what they’ll find when they click through.
  2. Link to your own content within your posts: Include links to other posts as often as you can within your content. The more you can get visitors clicking onto more pages of your website, the better.
  3. Include video content on your blog: Some of your visitors might prefer to watch a video over reading a blog post. Include videos on your website. Various forms of content ensure that there’s something for everyone.
  4. Use images in your posts to break up the text and add more visual appeal: Images make posts more fun to read—imagine flipping through a magazine that was nothing but text. Can you say boring? Blogs are the same way. Huge blocks of text turn visitors off.
  5. Craft intriguing headlines that visitors can’t help but click: Think of clever, intriguing titles for your blog posts. Visitors are more likely to click on a great headline than the same post with a ho-hum title.
  6. Add testimonials to your sidebar: Add client testimonials or positive reader comments to your sidebar. Visible positive feedback will pique your visitors’ interest and encourage them to explore your content further.
  7. Create a great tagline for your blog: A catchy slogan or tagline tells visitors what your blog is about and ideally says a little bit about your personality as well. Create a tagline that adds interest to your brand.
  8. Collaborate with others: Imagine stumbling onto a brand new blog by someone you didn’t know anything about. Wouldn’t you be more likely to stick around and see what they’re all about if you saw that they were working on a project with someone you already admire? Use this insight to your advantage.
  9. Make your content skimmable: Readers tend to skim online content more than they fully read it. Use lists, bullet points and text formatting to make it easy for readers to absorb the main points of your post.
  10. Make sure you’re marketing to the right audience: If you’re not targeting the right audience, it’s no wonder that the visitors that do show up aren’t sticking around. Think about what your ideal reader is like and determine where they might already be reading—that’s where you want to be marketing your blog.
  11. Call your readers to action—often: A call to action is a short, actionable step that gives visitors a sense of direction. These can be a simple “Sign up for my newsletter!” or “I’d love to hear what you think – please leave a comment below!” are both incredibly easy to implement.
  12. Don’t include annoying media on your blog: Noisy ads and automatic playlists annoy visitors—many are likely to close your blog without a second thought if they are bombarded with media when they land on your site.

Thanks Steven for this awesome stuff. Personally I hate those sites with annoying media and I guess many people do. So, for everyone reading this and have their sites loaded with these annoying stuffs, I very much urge them to remove them to encourage visitors to stay.

  4. Jose

Lets not forget posting pics of hot chicks. Works like a charm every time.

    1. If that’s your niche, that’s fine. But if you have a travel blog or a cooking blog, you’re just going to look totally unprofessional.
