- SEM: This term stands for Search Engine Marketing. What this means is that you would market a product or service through a search engine such as Google or Bing.
- Backlink: This is a hyperlink on another website that would lead back to your website once it is clicked. The more backlinks that are clicked, the higher your ranking goes in search engines, making this term very important to an SEO.
- PageRank: This algorithm created by Google helps determine how relevant a website is to the search engine.
- Linkbait: Linkbait is content published on a website with the goal of attracting as many backlinks as possible.
- Link Farm: A link farm is a group of site where every link sends you to every other website, with the purpose of increasing the PageRank of all the websites within the farm.
- Anchor Text: Anchor text of a backlink is the text that you are able to click on on the web site you are on.
- NoFollow: A link feature used by web page owners to let Google be aware that the website does not endorse the other page being linked to.
- Link Sculpting: Using the nofollow feature to their advantage, website owners were able to channel the way PageRank within their websites worked. By doing this, it ended up increasing the search rankings of pages the webmasters wanted to be improved upon.
- Title Tag: This is simply the title of the web site. It also happens to be one of the biggest parts of the Google formula for web indexing. Each title should be special, different, and emphasize the main points of your page.
- Meta Tags: Placed on the inside of the HEAD section of your page code, these tags are used to help give Google or any other search engine more of an idea of the type of content featured on your page.

- Sandbox: The sandbox is where Google places all newly added and non-indexed sites. These websites will not show up when their keywords are searched for.
- Keyword Density: To find the keyword density of any result you need to split the number of times that phrase is used by the final amount of words on that page.
- Keyword Stuffing: This is typically frowned upon, but is the practice of trying to inflate the word count of the page.
- Cloaking: This is the process of making one page have different looks and meanings to search engines and regular people viewing the page. This is done by placing a keyword in the text a certain number of times.
- Web Crawler: Simply a program that searches and indexes pages on the internet on behalf of a search engine such as Google.
- Duplicate Content: Multiple pages sharing similar content in order to try to gain hits. This is frowned upon and can end up penalizing your site.
- Canonical URL: A typical URL for accessing a specific page within the website you have created.
- Robots.txt: A file placed in the root of the site to help tell web crawlers what the structure of the site is.
