SEO Smart Links: WordPress SEO Plugin Review
Most of my SEO efforts, except the ones made in my theme itself, are made through 2 WordPress plugins which are adding amazing features to my WordPress install. The combination of these 2 plugins is affecting a lot of variables regarding my on-page SEO, such as Titles, Meta data, Cross-linking… Today I’d like to introduce you to the first one: SEO Smart Links.
SEO Smart Links
This plugin is not used by many bloggers, and that’s really a shame because it makes your life so much easier!
SEO Smart Links can automatically link keywords and phrases in your posts and comments with corresponding posts, pages, categories and tags on your blog.
SEO Smart Links looks for keyword phrases that match the titles of your posts and pages by default (and you can enable categories and tags matching too). These phrases are then turned into the links. The matching is case insensitive and the original case is preserved.
Further SEO Smart links allows you to set up your own keywords and set of matching URLs.
Finally SEO Smart links allows you to set nofollow attribute and open links in new window.
Everything happens completely transparent, and you can edit the options from the administration settings panel.

SEO Smart Links Premium: Avoid it!
I’ve been a long-time user of SEO Smart links and lately, the plugin sent a bunch of notices right into my face to invite me to buy the premium version of the plugin. Being a fan of the work of Vladimir Prelovac (the programmer behind this wordpress plugin), I decided to give it a shot. This is the worst decision I ever made regarding WordPress plugins!
SEO Smart Links Premium Bugged
First of all I faced a problem with keywords not linking to categories. I spent a good amount of time double-checking everything to see if I made a mistake while configuring the plugin but ended up not finding a solution. I emailed Vladimir to ask for help.
Two hours later, he emailed me a fixed version of the plugin. Fixed? So he is selling a bugged version for $149 + VAT? It seems so. As it was fast support, I let it go and continue with testing the plugin further. To my surprise, I spot a second bug with custom keywords not working correctly… Is that a joke?
When you pay this kind of price for a WordPress plugin, you expect it to be a 2 minutes-install and to be fully working. Apparently, this is not the way things work with SEO Smart Links…
As I have other things to do than trying to get the plugin to work, I diligently go to the payment processor (Plimus) and asked for a refund. Little did I know that Vladimir Prelovac doesn’t apply the same rules as everyone in the info products and plugins world.
Sure there is a 30 Days MoneyBack Guarantee, but it only applies if there is a bug that Vladimir can’t fix. To say it in other words, I’ve been screwed because I’m not going to spend the whole evening emailing back and forth with the programmer to get a premium WordPress plugin to actually work 100%.
I ended up deleting the premium plugin and re-installing the free version. Thanks for the $200 lesson.
SEO Smart Links Premium Features
Let’s go very quickly over the very impressive features that could make you buy the premium version: cache and stats.
Regarding the cache, if you are using any WordPress Cache Plugin, there is no real need for this feature to be built-in the plugin, unless you are receiving 1 000 000 unique visitors per month. But if that was the case, would you really be reading this blog post?
The stats feature, while looking like a nice addition, is totally useless in my opinion. The whole point of this plugin is to do its magic automatically. So there is no need to be a stats junkie and know that this post is linked from 213 of your pages through 342 links… What I like about this plugin is that you set it up then you can forget it and it will improve your SEO in the background.
SEO Smart Links Developer’s Quote
While trying to explain to the developer why I have other things to do than trying to get his premium plugin to work 100%, he basically told me that:
“Btw I am just back from France, skiing in Tignes. I paid 150 eur for two day ski-pass. That’s expensive. You get a plugin which can repay that money in couple a weeks, and will last you a life time. I think that’s value.”
A SEO plugin that repays itself in a couple of weeks? Silly me, thinking that good SEO doesn’t happen overnight and it takes a lot of time to see the benefits of your actions…
SEO Smart Links Final Advice
As a conclusion, I would advise you to use the free version of this plugin because it brings a lot of value to your blog by automatically inter-linking your posts and pages, but avoid the paid version unless you want a version that works less than the free version…
Download the free version of SEO Smart Links. Vladimir doesn’t really need the money anyway, he can already afford to go skiing in France.
