You should run an advertising audit on your blog.

Well, to increase your ad revenue if you’re using direct ads.

No matter what aspect of your blog you’re talking about you should never just set it up and forget it.

There’s always room for improvement, all the way down to the tiniest detail.

And this is particularly true when you’re talking about direct ads.

Advertisers look for several things before they’ll pay for ad space.

Traffic numbers are important, including unique visitors and the total number of page views.

As the blog owner you might think it only makes sense – the more traffic and page views you have, the more you can charge for ad space on your blog.

In the end, however, it’s not really how many people see those ads, it’s how many of them click through.

The advertiser doesn’t care of you have 10,000 or 10,000,000 page views.

If nobody clicks on his ads he’s just wasted his money.

So it’s up to you, the blog owner, to do whatever you can to improve the click through rate (CTR) on the ads you’re running on your blog.

Raise your CTR and you can raise your advertising rates, thus increasing your total advertising revenue.

What To Look For When You Run An Advertising Audit On Your Blog

Now that you know how important it is to monitor your ad results, let’s take a look at some of the things you can do to improve your CTR.

  • Generally, ads placed above the fold so readers don’t have to scroll to see them will do best.
  • Ads placed inside content typically perform better than those placed in the sidebars
  • Ads placed above and below comments generally perform well
  • Change colors, sizes and banners regularly to avoid ad-blindness
  • Change positions regularly until you find the best converting locations
  • For text ads like AdSense or Chitika, blend colors with your blog colors to improve CTR

Are Your Ads Relevant To Your Readers?

Generally, and advertiser will look at your readership before he decides to buy ad space, so it’s really more his problem than it is yours.

If he’s not getting the click throughs it could be because his ads aren’t relevant to your audience.

While the advertiser is partly to blame here, it’s also your reputation that’s on the line.

Both with your readers and your advertisers.

Don’t place ads on your blog that you know won’t be relevant for your readers.

Advertisers talk among themselves and if they don’t get results from the ads on your blog they’re going to tell their friends about it.

And running non-relevant ads makes your blog look spammy which is bad for your traffic.
