It’s easy to be productive when you’re feeling incredibly inspired and excited about your work. The ideas flow quickly and there are days when you can churn out a week’s worth of fantastic content without any distractions or procrastination. When blogger burnout hit’s, though, even typing that first sentence can be a struggle. Fortunately there are some ways to grind through it until you get back into your groove.

Here are a few tips that will help you get through a productivity rut, as well as ideas that will help you work faster and smarter even when the inspiration is flowing.

Determine the Reader Reaction You’re Hoping For

This tip is especially helpful for times when you are staring at a blank screen, unsure of where to begin. A great way to get the ideas rolling is to think about what your goal or objective is with the post you’re writing. For example, say you’re getting started on an article about eating a healthy diet, but you’re not sure what to write.

Think about the reaction you’d like your readers to have after reading the post. Is it, “This was just what I needed to motivate me to eat healthier,” or is it closer to, “Wow, eating a healthy diet isn’t so hard after all!” Those two reader reactions alone should spark completely different approaches that you would want to take.

If the first is your goal, you would want to emphasize the importance of eating well and perhaps even talk about the downsides of an unhealthy diet. If you are hoping for a reaction more similar to the second, you would want to focus on easy, simple ways that people can make healthy changes. Having a clear goal in mind as far as how you want your reader to feel can help you generate a lot of great ideas very quickly and get you pointed on the right track when starting your post.

Outline Your Post

Getting your post organized before you start writing the content makes it much more likely that you’ll start and finish the piece in one sitting, since you can clearly visualize the post in your mind before it’s completed.

Write First, Then Edit

Instead of looking up the correct definition of a word you’re not sure about, verifying statistics and quotes and so on, write the entire post before going back to edit. One handy way to make sure you don’t miss anything is to change your font color or add an asterisk (*) to things you know you’re going to want to come back to.

Focus on Quality, Not Quantity

One reason bloggers can get so stressed out is because when they fall behind, they think about all of the content that needs to be produced. “I have 5 posts to write – this is impossible!” Instead of looking at the big picture, which is going to overwhelm you, take it one step at a time. Choose one post, write it as well as you can, schedule or post it, then move on to the next one. Creating your content in bite-sized chunks this way is much more manageable and easier to deal with mentally.

    I think another thing we do is try to be to many people. I can effectively be one blogger… not 3. I write pages for both of my businesses, my third side business, and my blog.
