Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan “Press On” has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.

Well, Mr. Coolidge has a point there. I do believe there is a component of fate as well however.

I think that we cannot dictate to our fate. Perhaps we can take what we are given and make the best of it. And perhaps that will lead to great success.

However, not everyone can choose their destiny. For example, Mr. Coolidge was a president. But millions of people could set the goal to be President of the United States within their lifetime, but it is not possible that everyone will get that position in their lifetime.

In Fact, out of those millions, maybe 20 or 25 will be President in the span of 8 or 10 decades. When that time frame is over millions will have passed away without obtaining that goal.

However, persistence can certainly yield results based on pure grit and the will to never quit.

Things change for people. Their goals change or are changed for them, based on circumstance.

Hi Dave, that’s a very cool and clear elaboration of this quote. You also have a good point as well – We actually can’t dictate our fate as it is the development of events beyond our control. However, like you say, we can employ what we are gifted with although this is not a guarantee that we can evade ourselves from what fate have in store for us. But as it is said, prevention is better than cure, so does this thing about ‘fate’.

      Thanks.

I wanted to add a little more here.

As far as success books go : Think and Grow Rich is a good one?

And there is one old one I have called: How To Have Power and Confidence When Dealing With People – by Les Gibson – few people know of that one

The other would be Dale Carnegie’s – how to win friends and influence people.

Very well said! I like such way of thinking!

Today I was reading an article about mastering the six requirements to succeed, namely Ambition, Vision, Determination, Execution, Luck and Timing.

Well, I thought it’s a good idea to share with the entire Dukeo community something about determination that caught my eye and that will add up to the message in this quote. This quote from Steve Jobs will also be a good spice to the message – “I’m convinced that about half of what separates the successful entrepreneurs from the non-successful ones is pure perseverance”.

Determination or persistence is quite an important variable for one to be successful, it is something you can control and as well sweat for and don’t stop no matter how tough the whole journey takes you to. However, although controllable, determination is something more of natural. So, until there’s an addition of luck and timing you probably will never be successful.

Thanks a lot Steven and everyone else.
