When I was growing up my father owned his own business and I always felt sorry for him. He rarely took a day off and when he did he was always chomping at the bit to get back to work. It wasn’t until I’d graduated, gone to work for someone else, and then started my own business that I realized the truth. When you work for yourself, it doesn’t matter if it’s Monday, Tuesday or Sunday. Every day’s filled with new opportunities and you just gotta love it!
A lot of my friends have jobs out there in the “real” world. Jobs where they have to punch a time clock every morning at 9 a.m. They can’t take a break unless the boss says it’s OK and they get a whole half-hour for lunch. Then they have to sit at their desk or stand on an assembly line until that whistle blows at five. Yeah, they get a couple of weeks of vacation time every year but they have to “get it approved” first and we all know what that means.
Every Wednesday they start counting down the hours until 5 p.m. on Friday, just trying to make it through another week. And when Sunday rolls around the start panicking because Monday’s right around the corner and they’ll have to start the rat race all over again.
When you work for someone else you have to do what they tell you to do, when they tell you to do it. If you have an idea that might improve the workplace or make more money for the company you have to go through all the channels first, trying to convince someone to listen. But no matter how hard you try, you’re still just a number and nothing ever changes.
When you work for yourself, though, all that changes. You can work whenever you want, take a day off whenever you want, and there’s no one standing there telling you when to go to lunch. More important, you control your own destiny. If you have a business idea you want to try out, you don’t have to “get it approved.”
To the average person who still punches a time clock, it appears that having your own business would be Heaven. No pressure, no time clock, no boss. But I actually work harder now then I ever did when I worked for someone else. Not because I have to – because I want to.
When you own your own business there are so many more opportunities. There’s nothing standing in your way. Each day brings something new and exciting. Instead of dreading the coming day I jump out of bed ready to for more. When I feel like it, I do take a day off, sometimes even a week or two. But now I know realize my father spent so much time with his business because he wanted to, because he enjoyed the challenge and the unlimited possibilities. Now I look at the world just like my dad did. Monday? I love it! It’s one of the best days of the week. Bring it on!
