How to Grow Beyond Blogging

I’ve said before that very few bloggers make a full-time living from just one niche blog. In fact, I can’t think of a single A-list blogger who hasn’t grown beyond blogging on his journey toward fame and fortune. If you’re frustrated with a stagnant income level on your blog, then maybe it’s time to branch out into the Great Unknown. And that’s the real problem, isn’t it? What’s out there beyond your blog and how do you get to it?

What’s Out There Beyond Your Blog?

The possibilities are really infinite. It’s like trying to count the stars in the sky. You’re focused on one and you see two more out of the corner of your eye.

I hate to say “You can create your own products” because so many bloggers think that means “write an ebook.” If you think about it, not everybody has a book inside their head and the Internet is already littered with ebooks. And if an ebook is all you can think of then you’re thinking too small. You need to think bigger if you want to build a big business.

Your own product can be anything physical, digital or intellectual. You can sell your handmade jewelry, or downloadable directions to make handmade jewelry, or your ideas about how making your own jewelry can change your life.

Here’s something to ask yourself: If you knew you’d be successful no matter what you did, how would you choose to make money? Because anything is possible when you’re working online. Do you really want to spend the rest of your life cranking out blog posts, or is your dream much bigger than that?

My point is, you can build your blog into any kind of business you want, you can make it as big as you want, and you can make as much money as you want. It helps to have a direction in mind when you get started, but you can even change directions or add multiple streams of income any time you want. The more you learn about blogging the more you’ll realize there are opportunities around every corner.

How Do You Find Opportunities?

Finding opportunities really comes down to listening to your audience to find out what they need. Take Nike for example.

A long time ago, someone came up with the idea for the perfect basketball shoe. After successfully marketing their product they noticed that sales were beginning to level off so they listened to the people who were buying their shoes to see what else they might need. Basketball shoes led to fancier basketball shoes which led to football shoes which led to sportswear and sporting equipment and energy drinks for athletes and who knows where they’ll go in the future.

Nike has built a global brand on the back of a single pair of shoes simply by listening to their audience. Follow their example and grow your business beyond your blog by asking your audience: What else are you looking for and then develop relevant products or services that meet those needs.
