Digg Traffic: Is It Still Worth Something?
Any traffic is worth something, even if all you get out of it is an ego boost. Hey, at least somebody read something on your blog today, right? And look at those numbers! To say that any traffic is good traffic as long as you get the numbers is only accurate though if you’re getting paid each time someone lands on your page, regardless of how long they stay there. That being said, is Digg traffic still worth something, or would your time be better spent concentrating on a different traffic source?

The benefits of using Digg to generate traffic can be evaluated the same way you’d evaluate any other traffic source – you need to do the research. Digg is a social bookmarking site and like any other social site it has a unique user base. They’re interested in a broad range of topics, but within certain parameters.
If you’re selling gadgets or technology products, or products with a big WOW! or Cool! factor, then you’ll probably have some success with Digg. The site’s audience consists mainly of young-ish male techies, with liberal views and a penchant for gaming, comic books and all the other things that attract the attention of young men. If you’re looking for targeted traffic for your Baby Care blog, Digg probably isn’t the best place to start.
It’s also important to remember how Digg works. Most users don’t go there to discuss or socialize. They go there to share links. Users bookmark their favorite web pages and they can share those links with their contacts. But it’s similar to StumbleUpon in that users don’t stick around and chat, they just bookmark and move on or click a few links and move on.
Remember, too, the age of your audience and what that means in terms of attention span. If you’re hoping to hold them on your page for any length of time at all your content needs to be extremely relevant and compelling and it needs to have that Cool factor that young people are looking for Again, if your blog is filled with charts and graphs that track the hourly average rainfall in the Amazon rain forests, they probably won’t be on your page for long.
If you’re lucky enough to have one of your links turn up on the first page of Digg you can expect a large influx of traffic but you need to consider the quality and the reason for the visit. They’re visiting your page because someone nameless, somewhere on Digg, found it interesting and shared your link. They’re not there because they’re looking for anything in particular. They’re just ‘surfing’ for something that catches their eye. This is definitely not targeted traffic by any stretch of the imagination, but again, it’s new eyeballs on your blog and if you throw enough spaghetti on the wall, some of it’s bound to stick.
Which brings us back to the original question – Is Digg traffic still worth something? Of course it is as long as you understand what type of traffic you’ll attract and work at creating compelling content to keep them on your page. There’s a big problem with that, though – relevancy.
Knowing the type of reader you’re going to attract, is it possible for you to write relevant compelling content? Or will you have to step so far outside your niche to hold that reader’s attention that you might as well start a whole new blog? Keep in mind that if you do manage to snare some of those eyeballs, they’re going to expect to see more of the same type of content when they return in the future. If you write misleading content simply to lure them in, then all you’re really doing is wasting your time on the wrong type of traffic and in the end you’re just damaging your credibility.
The best way to determine if Digg traffic has any value for your blog is to join the site yourself and spend a few days getting familiar with the place. There’s always a small sub-group of people on every social site who are interested in topics that aren’t the norm and the only way you’ll find them is to search them out in those little nooks and crannies they like to hide in. When you do find those sub-groups, they’re some of the best traffic you can find, too, because their so passionate about their interests.
Never underestimate the value of any traffic until you do your own research. But have enough good business sense to recognize when you’re wasting your time and move onto something more productive.
