Cyberspace is full of mediocre blogs talking about everything form beekeeping to Zanzibar and everything in between. The one thing that most of those blogs have in common is that they’re just blogs, nothing more, and they will always be just blogs. If you want to make money with your blog, then you need to treat it like a business. Because even though it’s probably something you enjoy, that’s exactly what it is – your business. Bloggers who want to make money should learn from these big brands’ strategies.
You Need To Develop Your Brand
When you talk about branding you generally think about a logo, and designing your logo is an important first step in developing your brand. Your logo should present a clear image of you blog and what it stands for but it’s not enough to just pick a piece of clipart and run with it. Every aspect of your logo design means something – the font, the colors, even the image you choose will have an impact on everyone who sees it. You want to make sure your logo properly represent the message you’re trying to convey.
Your logo should also be designed for travel. It might look great spread across the header of your blog. But remember, this is a business. You’re going to be using your logo as an avatar on social sites, on advertising banners, and yes, even on business cards and stationery.
Another area of brand development is you blog’s overall message. Think about the big brands. When you go shopping for a pair of Nike shoes, you’re not interested in loafers and heels, too. You want to know about Nike athletic shoes. Decide what it is you’re trying to accomplish with your blog and get rid of everything else. Eventually, when people see your logo around the Internet, they’ll think – “Hey, yeah. That’s the blog about…!”

The big name blogs spend lots of money, too, hiring SEO experts to align their content and generate links so they’ll not only be more visible to the public but with the search engines as well. Title your blog so your visitors and the search engines will know what you’re all about. They XYZ Dog Training Blog or We Grow Better Tomatoes. Remember, the search engines will include a snippet from your html tags in the index. You have 160 characters. Use them wisely and be sure to include keywords.
Tags and categories are important for SEO and navigation and it’s important that you use keywords, as opposed to cutesy sayings. When the search engines send their bots to scan your site you want them to be able to understand what you’re about.
Your content titles are some of the most important content on your blog. They’re the first thing you readers see and they’ll read or they’ll click away based solely on your titles. You’ll be tempted to use comedy or puns or word plays to try to attract more attention, but don’t do it. Search engine bots can’t distinguish comedy from error and the best titles let the reader know exactly what they’ll learn if they stick around and read.
Building A Reputation
Those big brands and bloggers also pay image consultants to track their reputations and repair them if something goes wrong. Again, this is something you can do yourself. Search your name and your blog’s name on Google and look at the first 10 results. If they’re good, don’t worry. But if they’re bad, or worse yet, it’s somebody else’s info that comes up, start doing some damage control.
Set up profiles at high ranking sites like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Ezine Articles, Squidoo, etc. These sites rank well in the Indexes and you can bump some of those bad links off the index and get these good links on there instead.
Learn from these big brands’ strategies and before you know it your blog will rise above all those mediocre blogs and you’ll be making some money.
