It’s easy to get distracted when you’re working online and I’m not just talking about spending an afternoon playing World of Warcraft. There are so many different directions you can go with your blog and so many different programs you can implement. If you don’t stayed focused it’s easy to start drifting. To help keep you on track, here are eight critical questions you should ask yourself as a blogger.
Are You Passionate Or Phoning It In?
Take a look at some of your recent blog posts. Do they sound like you’re still passionate about your topic? Do you find yourself crawling to your computer every day instead of bounding out of bed ready to have at it. If you’re losing your passion for your blog then you need to figure out why and either get it back or move on. Your readers can tell when you’re only phoning it in and it’s not good for your business.
What Is Your Unique Selling Perspective?
You’re competing with dozens of other blogs in your niche, most of them probably promoting the same products or services you are. What are you doing to set yourself apart from the others? Why should someone visit your blog instead of your competitor’s?
Do You Know Your Audience?
If you haven’t researched your market since the day you set up your blog, you’re in trouble. Markets change, products change, technology changes, and all of these changes affect your audience. How well do you really know the people who are visiting your blog? And more important – how well do you know the rest of your audience, the ones who haven’t been to your blog yet? If you don’t know what they’re looking for how can you provide it?
Are You Connecting With Your Audience?
Are you doing anything to engage your readers? Like I said, there are millions of other blogs out there and people are fickle. All it takes is one blog post or really cool video and they’re more than happy to start following a different blog. Reply to comments, ask questions, push for subscribers so you can connect with a newsletter, and hit those social networks. Learn what your readers are looking for and be the first one to provide it.
Are You Working To Extend Your Reach?
These days, with Google constantly changing up the rules, it’s important to start reaching out for traffic instead of waiting for the search engines to send it. Start guest blogging. Join a new social network. Network with other bloggers. Write some articles for syndication. Don’t wait for your audience to find you. Go out there and pull them in off the street.
Have You Done Something Remarkable?
You’ve heard the term “sharable content” but have you tried to craft any yourself? Put it on your calendar today and force yourself to stretch your knowledge and talents to create at least one remarkable piece of content each month.
Are You Delivering Top-Quality Content?
Are you using synidcated content, or spun content, or crappy, spammy content from nameless, faceless guest bloggers? If you are, you’re risking your ranking. Not only that, you’re also risking your traffic. Readers don’t stick around once they realize you’re only phoning it in.
Are You Developing Multiple Income Streams?
You’re going to need some astronomical traffic numbers if you’re planning to make a full-time living off of one blog selling a $17 ebook. And if that blog gets hacked or crashes or that ebook becomes obsolete – you’re in big trouble. One of the most critical questions you need to ask is this: Are you developing multiple streams of income? It only makes good business sense. Never put all of your eggs in one basket.
