If you’re still on the fence, don’t worry. You’re not alone. A lot of people have a hard time making the decision to go after their own business, and the idea of starting that business on line is pure culture shock. I get it. You’re used to punching that time clock and having someone tell you what to do. But if it’s worth having then it’s worth taking a risk. Here are five reasons why working online truly rocks.

working online is better than having a job

No More Rush Hour Traffic

I’ve had jobs in the past where I had a one hour commute both ways. That means two hours a day I spent sitting in my car in traffic. Ten hours a week equals 40 hours a month and that’s a huge chunk of time you could be spending with family or friends. And let’s not even talk about how much earlier I had to get up every morning or how much money I was spending on gas and car maintenance every month. It all adds up.

When you work online you never have to leave your home. You’re not wasting hours every day sitting in traffic. That’s two hours a day you can spend doing something you want. You’re not spending hundreds of dollars a month on gasoline, new tires and oil changes.

You Can Work Wherever You Want

I know several bloggers who don’t have a permanent home anymore because their dream was always to travel the world. When you work online you can do that. You can move every year or every month if you want to. Just want to go see Paris? Take you laptop along and update your blog from the top of the Eiffel Tower. Your readers will love it!

Your Schedule Is Flexible

I think the one thing I appreciate most about working online is the flexibility of my schedule now. If friends call at the last minute and I run out to the pub. If you have kids then you know what it’s like to miss soccer games and recitals because your boss wouldn’t let you leave early. When you work online you ARE the boss. Take a couple hours off and make it up tomorrow.

No More Boss Breathing Down Your Neck

You could be employee of the month every month for a year but you still can’t make a decision without getting the boss’ approval. And he’s standing there, looking over your shoulder, breathing down your neck, just waiting for you to make a mistake.

Like I said, when you work online you’re the boss. You decide what direction you want to take your business and when you have a brilliant idea you don’t have to share credit with anyone.

You Own It

Unless you have hefty financial backing there’s no way you can start a brick and mortar business these days but anyone can afford to start a business online. If your dream has always been to own your own successful business then here’s your opportunity. Working online rocks and the business you build is your own. It’s something you can be proud of and pass on to your children. And if you don’t get started soon, your kids will probably beat you to it!

I have been working online since 1996 and agree that it rocks. The main things are figuring out how to get out and do things away from the home to keep life interesting, discipline to get dressed decently in the morning, and connecting with other human beings face to face when possible.

Human interaction in the work place is certainly something that I’m missing nowadays. This is why I’ll be renting an office starting in January or February.

December 14th marked one year since I became self-employed. I have absolutely adored every second of working from home! I definitely think it takes a certain personality type to (1) be disciplined enough to actually do work and (2) survive without feeling bored or isolated. But for me it has been awesome and I’m very productive. That said, I’m much harder on myself than any of my former bosses… Something to work on in 2013!

Congratulations on making the move Andrea! It requires a lot of motivation to finally drop the day job to get fully involved with online work.
