Is it possible to earn a six figure income from blogging?

I won’t lie to you – over the years I’ve had my ups and downs, but I’m a firm believer in “Never Say Never” and I also truly believe you can do anything you set your mind to.

Personally, I think you can earn a six-figure income mowing lawns or washing cars if you want it bad enough, but you’re here to talk about blogging, so let’s have at it.

Let’s start by taking a look at that term that’s always so loosely tossed around: Six-figure income.

A six-figure income is any income that totals $100,000 or more, presumable over the span of one year.

Break that down into an hourly wage for someone who works a straight 40 hours each week, 52 weeks a year, and you have a little over $48 per hour.

Now, $48 is a bit of a stretch but it isn’t unheard of in the offline world.

In order to make that much money you’d probably need at least some secondary education and probably a college degree.

You’d also need a good amount of job experience, all of which would require a lot of hard work and long hours on your part, but if you were guaranteed to make a six-figure annual income it’d be well worth it, don’t you think?

The problem with that six-figure income when you’re talking about blogging is that nobody takes into consideration that it’s going to take the same amount of hard work and dedication to make $48 online as it does to make it in the offline world.

That six-figure income isn’t something that’s just handed to you, it’s a reward for you hard work, patience, dedication and commitment, just like it is in the offline world.

Here’s the thing… Nobody makes $100,000 with just one blog, just like nobody makes $100,000 mowing lawns in just one neighborhood.

If you want to increase your income from mowing you have to buy more mowers, hire more people, branch out into more neighborhoods and more cities, add landscaping and gardening services, and learn to build and manage a full-blown business.

If you want to make $100,000 online then you need to build more blogs, hire people to help you maintain those blogs, branch out into other revenue streams, add your own products and services and learn to build and manage a full-blown business.

But they don’t tell you that when they’re trying to sell you their make money online guides.

And because the only experience you have with the Internet is playing games and chatting on Facebook, you think that blogging is going to be all fun and games, too.

With a mindset like that it’s almost impossible to even consider being successful, let alone making $100,000 a year.

It’s true that anyone can make a six-figure income from blogging and there are plenty of bloggers out there who do, myself included.

But that “anyone” has to be willing to do the work and gain the knowledge and experience necessary to build a successful business.

Hi, great article, and I liked the fact that you wrote it from such a reality based point of view. Yes, I’m sure people many people make a six figure (I’m not quite there yet), but to get there takes time, and commitment. I hope many people who are new to blogging, read your post. Well done mate.

Sounds sensible advice, Steven! After all, there is old saying attributed to many successful people “The harder I work the luckier I become” (and variations) I think a lot people want the income/fame/fortune without getting up, switching off the TV and rolling up their sleeves. Others work hard but not effectively. The rest teach how to do it! Looking forward to earning more from you! Andrew

Andrew, I had this issue with my ex-business partner who wanted the money but wasn’t willing to put in the effort. This is why I got rid of him.

A very well written article, `in my opinion it is easily possible , However you will have to get out of this “I make money whilst i sleep” mentality.. But definitely it is possible :)

Hey KJ, thanks for stopping by. Indeed, “making money while you sleep” is among the most used catchphrases by people who’re selling get rich quick products. It’s possible to reach this level of income only if you work hard/smart.

Definitely it’s possible, only thing is you have get / set your habits around your goals. Not everyone can make 6 figure income but anyone can make 6 figure income. If you put your efforts every single hour on every single day definitely its possible. Thanks a lot Steven for setting the right tone for the article as many other articles misled people to become success over night. Really like your article.

The most difficult part once you set your own routine is to stick to it day in and day out. It’s so easy to let go of your motivation and get distracted by other things.
