Monthly Income Report April 2019: $1,472.80

It’s time for a quick recap of April!

Boy, what a roller coaster it is to build online properties from scratch…

I went from losing almost $2,000 in March to making a profit of almost $1,500 in April.

There are several factors that led to this massive change as you will see below. Let’s get started with this monthly income report, shall we?

WS1 Website (Launched 2013)

As I was saying in last month’s report, WS1 has some seasonality to it. The beginning of each year is usually pretty bad, and Spring / Summer generally mark the beginning of the good season all the way to Christmas.

It seems like this year won’t be any exception to that rule. Traffic hit the second highest number after May 2018, and the RPM (revenue per thousand visitors) almost hit $60.

The only month with a better RPM for this website was November 2018, and it was mostly thanks to Black Friday.

As you can see in the table, most months last year had a RPM in the $30-ish range. This year was almost always above $40 so far.

The traffic increase is being compounded by the design changes I made last year in August / September. We’ll see in the coming months if the trend stays the same.

WS2 Website (Launched 2015)

As I was explaining last month, this website got completely destroyed by the March Google update.

I really don’t have much to say about this website anymore, and I’ll probably stop reporting these numbers next month.

WS3 Website (Launched 2015)

After I made massive change to this website in August / September 2018 both in terms of design and structure, traffic crashed.

These were drastic changes but I felt that these were required if I ever wanted this website to come back from the dead.

Apr 191,12813.74%15510.32%16$18.43$16.34$0.12$1.15

So far the traffic is nowhere near where it was a year ago, but it’s encouraging to note that traffic is growing back as the website had over 1,000 visitors in April.

I am conscious that it is nothing to brag about, but considering that it never received over 1,000 in a month since September last year, I’ll still take it as a win.

The RPM keeps jumping up and down, but that’s to be expected with such low traffic numbers. Stability comes with scale.

WS4 Website (Launched 2018)

Talking about scale, WS4 is still growing at a snail’s pace. Visitors only increased by a few percents month over month.

This month I have decided to stop spending money on new content to decrease my losses. Since I generally spend $1k to $1.5k per month on this website, this is a decent amount of money saved.

As with WS3, the traffic is still fairly low and that means instability in terms of RPM. April produced the lowest RPM number since this website was started: $110-ish.

This is still a pretty good number when comparing with other websites, but it is disappointing for this particular one.

To my surprise, this website is still showing up in more Google searches compared to the previous month. However, this does not result in many more clicks, which means it’s ranking for many searches, but poorly.

In April, this website had 240,597 impressions on Google. These impressions resulted in 834 clicks, which means an average click-through rate of 0.35%. The average position in Google results pages was 45.

The following chart shows the cumulated revenue and expenses to date for each month. Additionally, it shows the current website value as well as the return on investment before and after selling the website (if I decide to sell it).

From the start of this project until the end of last month, this website generated $3,367.30 in revenue. I spent $16,323.10 since this website’s inception, which means a net loss of $12,955.80. In other words, that’s a 79% loss so far.

However, by using a conservative 25x multiplier on the average revenue of the past 3 months, we can calculate this website value: $7,386.42. By selling this website, I would make a significant loss of $5,569.38. That would be a 34% loss on my investment.

Of course, I’m still years away from a potential sale for this website, but I’m keeping track of these numbers to know the trend, as well as the evolution month after month.

April was a better month for Dukeo.

I did publish several sponsored blog posts in April and I’m generally much happier with the quality of the articles that get submitted.

I also generated a referral for Bluehost through my guide about how to start a blog.

On a different subject, here is a list of the 10 most popular articles from this blog during last month:

What about the money?

Here is a breakdown of the money flow for my various projects.

To make this report easier to understand, I’m using a simple color code: green numbers are positive, red numbers are negative.

Please keep in mind that these figures may not be 100% accurate due to various factors such as refund requests and network adjustments. The terms for each payment may also vary. As a result, these numbers may differ from the actual payments issued and received.

All in all, April has been a very good month.

All my project were cashflow-positive, and I didn’t spend any money on new content which massively reduced my expenses.

Also, I was hinting at the idea of taking some freelance work to make some extra cash and I did some media buying for a few days. It was supposed to be a long-term contract but it didn’t work out as the person who hired me had unrealistic expectations for the amount he was willing to pay, and the time commitment he was asking.

It’s refreshing to finally have a “green month” after swimming in red for 11 months. This is only the first step, but it gives me some clues about where I should focus my time and energy.

What’s happening next?

In May I am planning to do some work on the new website (WS5) that I started last month.

It’s still not receiving many visitors but there are a few things I was to set correctly right from the start to make sure I maximize its chances of success.

Stay tuned for the next update!
