Tyler Perry’s varied career as an actor, directory, playwright, producer, director and entrepreneur is the perfect example of what you need to do to be successful at Internet Marketing. If you were to take his life and turn it into an online business you’d have an exact blueprint for success. So let’s take a look at what we can learn about Internet Marketing from Tyler Perry.
It’s often difficult to explain what it means to follow your passion. That’s the first advice everyone always gives when you ask about how to be successful online. But no one ever really explains it. We can look to Perry for the answer, though, because that’s exactly what he’s done.
Perry went to church each week with his mother, but the rest of his week was filled with violence and abuse that eventually became so unbearable he tried to commit suicide, just to get away from his father. In his early 20s, Perry listened as a guest on The Oprah Show explained that some people found it therapeutic to write about their problems and Perry proceeded to write, and write, and write.
Five years later, after working 2 or 3 jobs at a time to finance his venture, Perry produced the first performance of his play “I Know I’ve Been Changed” on a $12,000 budget – every cent he had to his name. The play was a bust and he spent the next 6 years writing and rewriting and working to earn the money to produce the play again. The second time around, his play was a success. And from there, the rest is just history. Forbes Magazine once estimated Perry’s earnings at more than $75 million – and that was a few years ago.
Perry is the perfect example of what happens when you forget about money and just follow your passion. He spent more than 6 years writing that first play and while he was writing he lived in cheap apartments and sometimes even free lodging. The whole time he was writing he also worked – to support himself and to provide seed money for his production.
If you want to know what it means to follow your passion, ask yourself this question – If you were able to do anything you wanted to do, without thinking about money, what would it be? What interest would you pursue? Perry chose play writing. He had a story to tell and he was driven to succeed. What would you choose?
Perry’s first movie was titled “Diary of a Mad Black Woman” and he followed it up with “Madea’s Family Reunion“. Both movies were huge hits at the box office and Oprah even hosted Perry and the co-stars on her show.
However, because of the nature of most of his work, Perry is caught between a rock and a hard place. While he feels strongly about his work and the message he’s conveying, there’s a very large and vocal group who disagrees with everything Perry stands for. But this is a perfect example of targeting an audience.
Perry has found success because he’s stayed true to his message. He could have tried changing his message so he’d appeal to a broader audience but what good would that do? In the end, the people who were following him because they liked what he had to say would stop because they wouldn’t like the new Perry. And the people who weren’t following him, still wouldn’t be interested in what he had to say because he would come across as just some insincere shyster.
There are more than 7 billion people a day visiting the Internet and there’s no way you can appeal to all of them. The only way to develop a strong, loyal following is to stay true to yourself and your message.
Perry’s first attempt at producing a play was a total disaster and it cost him his entire life savings. Yet he never gave up on his dream. He didn’t count that disaster as a failure, it was just the first step on his long road to success.
