I’ve always loved that saying, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” and it’s particularly appropriate for bloggers. We have so many choices and opportunities for making money online so it’s easy to freeze, like a deer in the headlights, because we don’t know which way to turn first. Taking that first step is crucial but it by no means guarantees your success. I think it’s also important to remember that your journey might start with a single step, but you need to keep moving if you want to reach your goal.
Make A Decision
That first step is the hardest but the real kicker is you’re going to have to make that first step over and over again. Do you want to be a niche blogger, a news blogger or an information blogger? Do you want to use WordPress or some other platform? Should you join Facebook or Twitter? Should you create your own product? If so, what should it be?
As a blogger you’re going to be faced with decisions every day, decisions that will affect your business. Some will require more research or information than others, or you’ll need to learn a new skill so you’ll need to decide if it’s worth the investment of your time. Some bloggers get caught up in the whole decision making process and never actually make one, they just keep “thinking about it.” If you’re going to move forward you have to choose a path and take that first step.
The blogging path is littered with obstacles and there are forks in the road at every turn. You have choices to make every step of the way. Being able to make those choices is important but you also need to be able to stay focused on the path because there’s another opportunity over there, and over there, and oops – there’s another one. Once you choose a path you need to put blinders on and follow it through to the end. Then, when you’re reached that goal, you can look around for the next opportunity.
The shortest distance between Point A and Point B is a straight line but there’s something to be said for stepping off the beaten path and taking the scenic route occasionally. Trying new things can give you a fresh perspective on your business. And sometimes you simply run up on an insurmountable obstacle and you’re forced to take a detour, whether you want to or not, so it’s important to be flexible when you’re reaching for a goal.
Technology and marketing techniques change fast on the Internet and you need to be willing and able to adapt your plan at a moment’s notice. So take that first step, keep your eyes on the road, and keep moving ahead.
Understand Your Journey Never Ends
In the business world, if you stop moving forward that gives your competitors the chance to catch up, and eventually pass you by. In any successful business, whether it’s online or off, you have to keep moving forward. Like I said, technology and marketing techniques change fast on the Internet. Your blog might be a powerful, money-making business today and six months from now, if you don’t keep up with those changes, it might not even be indexed.
There will always be something new for you to learn because if you don’t your competitors will. So take that first step on on your journey to success but wear sturdy shoes. You’re in for a long, rewarding journey.
