How to Make Money Online with Fiverr

They say everyone has a price and at that price is a mere 5 bucks.

That’s it.

Not 10 bucks. Not 6 bucks.

Just 5. has been around for a few years now and it bills itself as:

The place for people to share the things they’re willing to do for $5.

And you’ll find that people who make money online with Fiverr are willing to do all sorts of things for a fin:

  • They’ll send Tweets to thousands of Followers
  • They’ll have thousands of people like your Fan Page
  • They’ll write 1000 word articles
  • They’ll design your new business logo
  • They’ll cartoon-ize your photograph
  • They’ll install software and write programs
  • They’ll record videos and sing Happy Birthday

And that’s only the beginning. The deeper you dig on the crazier the offers become. Someone offers to speed write your message in lipstick on the bathroom mirror and take a digital photo. Someone else offers to write your message in lipstick on her bum and take a digital photo. Then there’s the guy who offers to read Dr. Suess stories to your kids via Skype.

How do these people make money? In fact, a better question might be – DO these people make money? Let’s take a closer look and see what it takes to successfully make money online with Fiverr.

fiverr website

You can only charge $5 for your service

These days, a five dollar bill won’t go far and that’s the reason the whole Fiverr concept is so successful. Nobody thinks twice about spending $5. In fact, some people go to Fiverr just to see what kind of entertainment they can get for a finske. Hence, the woman who’ll write your message in lipstick on her bum! She’s successful because her product is pure entertainment and at $5 a pop, nobody is going to argue about the price. Heck, a greeting card costs more than $5 these days and she’s willing to write your message on her bum and send you a picture!

But you also need to be realistic. You can only charge $5 for your offer so you need to look at it like a business person and remember that Time Equals Money. If you’re offering to design a custom website for someone for $5 and it takes you a full 8 hour day to get it done, then you’ve earned a whopping 62 cents per hour. If you’re offering to write a 1000 word article for someone and it takes you 3 hours to accomplish it, you’ve earned a grand total of $1.66 per hour.

On the other hand, if you come up with a great idea like writing messages on your bum and taking a picture, then you’re probably going to be able to earn $50 or $60 an hour. Assuming, of course, you use washable ink and you write really fast. Oh, and that you also have a nice looking bum!

You have a lot of competition

Obviously, as in the case of the lady with the bum, people are willing to do all sorts of things for $5 so you have to be creative so you can stand out from the crowd. But you also need to know the audience. Taking pictures of your bum is a creative approach, no doubt, but most of the people who actually pay for services at Fiverr repeatedly are looking for professional services, such as writing, design work, advertising and promotional help, etc. While the lady’s offer is attractive, it probably won’t provide a steady, long term income. Which leads us to the most important point of all…

Use your Fiverr gig to generate an upsell

Let’s face it, it takes a lot of 5 dollar bills to pay the rent each month and no matter what kind of unique idea you come up with, you’re going to be very busy trying to earn a living at 5 bucks a pop. At $5 per message that woman is going to have to photograph her bum 20 times just to earn $100. So your Fiverr gig should only be the opening ball, so to speak, and you need some form of boosting: for example, following it up with an upsell.

For example, let’s say you have some graphic design skills and you want to start making some money online with Fiverr. You could advertise a gig where, for $5, you’ll create an attractive button package for a website. Your package might include a Buy It Now button, a Follow Me On Twitter Button, a Friend Me On Facebook button and a unique icon or two relevant to the website. All of that would be easy enough to create in just a few minutes times.

Remember, though, at 5 bucks a pop, you’re going to have to create that entire package of buttons 20 times a day just to make $100 each day. So your next step should be to create a more expensive graphics package to offer to those people who like your $5 Fiverr gig. For example you could offer to design headers and footers or banners for $25 or $30. Anyone who has use of custom designed buttons will also have a need for other custom graphics and if they liked your $5 buttons they’ll likely be interested in anything else you have to offer.

No special skills required

But what if you have no special skills and you still want to make money online with Fiverr? Everyone has some type of skill. Take a look through the gigs that are already listed and you’ll probably come up with quite a few ideas of your own. If not, all you really need is a digital camera, a tube of lipstick and some nice handwriting!

A lot of people make money online every day at and it’s a great place to get creative and showcase your skills. If you really want to make some money with it, all you have to do is treat it like a business: Remember that Time Equals Money and your $5 gig is just your opening ball.

I agree you have to be quite creative. Once you get your first gig and a review then more people are likely to bid on your gig in future. It’s hard though getting your first gig.

    1. Donna Anderson

Fiverr is like anything else, Michelle. You have to find your own way. And when you do, you just keep tweaking and making it better. It might take 2 or 3 tries to come up with something that stands out from the crowd. but once you do, then, like you said, you’ll get that first review and the rest will be history.

    2. Steven

Indeed, getting started is always the most complicated thing, but once you get to it and manage to get some momentum, it’s only a matter of time before one of your gigs makes it big.

    3. Michelle

Yeah I know what you mean.

  2. Dana

I’ve always thought about fiverr. Must be a great way to earn money.

    1. Donna Anderson

Dana, Fiverr IS a great way to make money. Provided you do it right. Make sure you read this article before you jump into it, though. And make sure you keep both eyes open when you jump!

  3. Affmaster

I put up a fiverr gig for some software I had and got a few gigs. its been brilliant working on the side. It pays the bills. Got to admit you definitely need to stand out. Be bold.

  4. Liz

I am amazed at what some people are willing to do for a fiver. I guess it comes down to how much money and time you have to devote to the gig. It is interesting though. It’s hugely popular for bother sellers and buyers.

    1. Donna Anderson

It is pretty amazing, isn’t it Liz? Most of those people with the strange offers though use those to pull in some really great ‘real’ business. That Fiverr offer is just to attract attention.

    2. Liz

Yes I agree Donna. It’s a great calling card.

  5. Mitch

Fiverr has to be one of the best and creative sites to come out in a long time. Now we are inundated with copycats.

    1. Donna Anderson

Mitch, Fiverr has been a huge success since it first went online I think. I tried it a couple of times myself and got pretty beat up. You really have to be careful what you offer and make sure you can handle all the orders.

  6. First Website

I have seen some weird gigs on Fiverr. People are willing to do anything.

    1. Donna Anderson

You’re right, First Website. Some of them are pretty strange. But some of them are pretty brilliant!

  7. Gorman

But don’t forget you need a great looking bum to do that work. No hairy guys please.

    1. Donna Anderson

Gorman, I wondered if anyone was going to comment on that. The PPC guys always say if you have T & A in your ad you can sell anything. :)

    2. Steven

Maybe there is a market for hairy guys… Who knows?! :D

    3. Gorman

      Actually maybe there is.

  8. Flash Games

I have a few gigs set up. it dribbles in but hey it’s an extra fiver or so.

  9. Sad Music

I must admit Time Is Money so you need to be able to create an offer that will be quick to create and easy to deliver. Yes it’s good for an upsell. But some people earn quite good money on Fiverr so they are doing something right.

  10. John

It’s a brilliant site for getting cheap work done. i use it all the time.

  11. Michelle

Can you recommend some more sites like Fiverr?

    1. Steven

There are many copycats out there but I’m not sure you can generate the same kind of attention through them.

    2. Michelle

Thanks…I thought so too but it is good to have an expert like you confirm the same!

  12. Web Design Inspiration

We have implemented Fiverr for a client and he is still thanking us.

    1. John

Have also enjoyed using Fiverr so far.

  13. First Website

Fiverr makes it very challenging for suppliers to compete with one another.

  14. Flash Games

Many copycat sites are on their way to compete with Fiverr!

    1. Web Design Inspiration

Yeah…but first mover advantage is always a benefit.

  15. Web Design Studio

I feel bad giving just $5 for some of the great work I get out of the suppliers on Fiverr

    1. Steven

You can always hire the person to do some other work outside of fiverr for you and pay them more.

  16. Charleen Larson

Sam Cornwell recently posted a screen shot seeming to indicate he’s crossed the $10,000 earnings threshold on Fiverr, so it’s possible to make real money.

  17. Munna

I have made a couple of hundreds of $$$$ from fiverr as it was one of my earliest means of making money online and if properly done can be a good source of income. Your tips are definitely correct as they could help one set up and generate a good amount of money from doing the little things that pay $5.
