Ebay or Etsy: Sites like Ebay or Etsy are perfect for those who know nothing about working online. If you have no idea how to set up a website and you want to jump right in, then choose a site like this. While it does help, you really don’t need to know anything about Internet Marketing to use these types of sites. You don’t need to worry about how you’re going to get traffic because shoppers automatically come to these sites.

Amazon: You probably didn’t realize you can also sell your hand made jewelry on Amazon. It’s a little more complicated than Ebay or Etsy but the marketing benefits are also much greater. Amazon is the largest Internet Marketplace on the entire Web. Every day, billions of people visit Amazon, looking for something to buy.

Amazon also commands a lot of respect from the search engines. You’ll notice that when you do a search for any type of product, one of the first three listings on the index is usually an Amazon listing. If you have the skills to be able to list your jewelry on Ebay then, with just a little more effort, you can also become an Amazon Seller.

Free Blogs: Free blogs are another marketing avenue. and offer free blogging space to anyone who wants it and a lot of people make a lot of money this way. All you need to get started is an email address and a basic understanding of blogging. Again, if you can list your items on Ebay, you should have no technical trouble setting up one of these free blogs.

Your Own Blog: Finally, if you have the skills, you can set up your own self-hosted blog or website. This requires buying a domain name which costs around $10 USD. You’ll also have to pay for hosting which costs around $5 to $7 per month.

The difference between using one of the free blogging sites and setting up your own self-hosted blog is that you have much more control when you host your own site. Some of the free sites will limit what you can and can not do with regard to making money. And if your site becomes very popular, those freebie sites may not be able to handle all the traffic.

There are two benefits of using a self-hosted blog to make money online selling hand made jewelry. The first is that you can do anything you want – it’s YOUR blog. You can post pictures and videos to show people how you make your jewelry. You can post articles describing the process and the materials. And every time you post a new article or picture or video, that’s one more avenue for searchers to use to find your products.

The second benefit is that you have a captive audience. When you list your jewelry at Ebay or Amazon, shoppers can see how pretty it is and read all about it. But they can also see other handmade jewelry on the same site. Usually right there on the same page. With your own blog, the only thing they’re going to see is YOUR handmade jewelry.

One of the drawbacks with selling your hand made jewelry on a blog – whether it’s self-hosted or free – is promotion. The Internet is a very big place and there are a lot of people out there selling hand made jewelry. No matter what you sell online these days you’ll have some competition. So you need to know how to promote your site in the search engines so buyers will be able to find you amid all the other hullabaloo that’s going on online.

To promote your site you need to know about things like keywords and Search Engine Optimization. It’s not hard to learn but it is a little time consuming. If you’ve never worked on the Internet before and you’re unsure of your online promotional skills then start out with Ebay or Etsy first. Set up a blog on the side and once you get it built up and get some traffic coming in, then you can make money online selling your hand made jewelry from both locations.

  2. Michelle

I find it interesting that you chose handmade jewelry as an example, but Amanda is absolutely right, you can sell just about anything online in this way. If you’ve got a great idea and you think you can make money off of it, it’s not hard with all these options! Love how this article shows all the pros and cons, very very helpful!

  3. Chris

Wow, I almost didn’t read this since I thought it was about necklaces and stuff, but I’m so glad I did! This is some very cool information, definitely very well thought-out. I didn’t really think of some of the drawbacks listed, so that’s always good to know.

  4. Sarah

I would definitely advise against free blogs for selling things, that’s not really what they were meant for, and honestly if you’re selling something that you intend to make a profit on, hosting your own site will literally pay for itself.

    1. Liz

Too true! :) Good advice, Sarah. And great article!

If you’re trying to run a business, any kind of business, online then you can almost be guaranteed that hosting your own site will be the better choice. Unless you’re computer illiterate, but even then, you can and should learn how the internet works. It can only ever benefit you to know. The world is moving in that direction anyway, you don’t want to be left behind. I vote for having your own site every time.

That’s a good point, everyone should learn more about this no matter what. It’s obviously where technology is headed.

Things like SEO and Ad Copy you can hire other people to do that for you. It’s really not very hard, so I would say unless you really don’t know much about the online world, having your own blog is better.

  8. Jony

I think if you have the time and the expertise to be running your own site, then go for it. But if you’re just looking for a quick way to make money, then Amazon, Ebay or Etsy is what you are looking for. They may limit you, but that the simple and easy route.

  9. First Website

If you haven’t tried to make money online, you need to. It’s the new way that business is being done. No matter which route you choose, you need to get into this!
