A website: Every small business should have a website and it’s even more important if you’re operating locally. Most people turn to the Internet when they’re looking for local service providers. You want to make sure they find you when they’re looking for someone to design their brochures.
Copywriting skills: There’s a science and an art to writing advertising content that works – that actually sells the product or service. Describing the features of a product or service is one thing, but being able to turn those features into benefits – that will make someone open their wallet – is quite another. However, if you don’t feel your writing skills are up to par, you’ll also find plenty of websites you can turn to to find freelance writers and graphic designers who’ll be happy to work with you at minimal cost.
How Much Should You Charge?
Your fees for your design services can range anywhere from $25 to $200 per hour, depending on what the market will bear in your area. Keep in mind, too, while $25 an hour might sound like a lot of money, you’re not actually going to be working on designing brochures every hour of every day. You’ll have other business responsibilities, like rounding up new clients or record keeping, and you can’t bill your clients for time spent on other activities. Make sure you charge enough for your services to make it profitable. Otherwise you won’t be in business very long.
How Do You Find Clients?
This is probably the easiest part of the whole process because your clients are everywhere. Your local newspaper is packed with ads every day. Most businesses have some type of brochure or advertisement on the counter – the dentist, the auto repair shop, the florist… every business in your town does some type of advertising.
Pick up some of those brochures and look at some of those ads. Rewrite a few and personally visit those companies and offer them as samples. Provided, of course, that they’re better than the originals. Send emails to some of the larger businesses with samples of your work attached.
It’s a little intimidating at first to approach these business owners about handling their advertising brochures but you have one thing on your side that a lot of others don’t – you’re a member of their community. And to most small business owners, that means a lot. They would much rather hand their business to a local service provider because they’re in the same boat you are – they need local support.
