You’ve probably seen a few posts on things you should do when you set up your blog.

But sometimes if you look at it as “Things you shouldn’t do” it makes more of an impact.

So here, in no particular order, are the top ten blog design mistakes you should avoid.

1. No “About Me” Page

Take a few minutes and set up an “About Me” page so your readers can see there’s a real person behind the blog.

Share as much or as little personal information as you feel comfortable with and let your readers know why you’re blogging.

2. No Author Photo

While you’re at it, put a real picture of yourself on your About Me page, for three reasons.

One, it just increases the bond with your readers because they can see that you’re a real person.

It also adds credibility to your blog because you’re not afraid to let people see the real you.

Your photo also helps with SEO.

If you create a Google Author account and link to your About page – with your picture – searchers see your picture next to your link on the index which increases your clicks.

3. Vague Post Titles

There are some cases where cutesy titles work and you can be as creative as you want, however being vague isn’t an option.

Let your readers know what they’ll learn if they click on your link and don’t make them have to stop and think about it.

4. No Link Descriptions

If you want your readers to follow a link then tell them what they’ll find at the other end.

Readers are wary of any link, that’s why you have to work so hard to get them to click.

Telling them “Click Here.

You’re gonna love this.” just isn’t enough.

5. Nothing To Point To Special Content

If you have posts on your blog that were big hits when they were published chances are they’d still be hits today – if your readers could find them.

Use a widget to pull Popular Posts or create your own images and links to highlight that special content.

6. No Apparent Navigation

I find it so surprising that so many blogs have no real navigation – anywhere.

No categories, no navigation bar for pages, not even any visible internal linking.

It’s hard enough to get readers to scroll to the end of a post.

There’s no way they’re going to scroll through your whole blog.

7. Sporadic Posting Frequency

For best results, post frequently and regularly so every time a reader comes back to your blog he sees fresh, new content.

8. Mixed Topics

Stick to one topic.

In fact, in the beginning, stick to a narrow topic so you can pile up plenty of content before you add another category.

Visitors will stay on your blog longer if you can keep sending them deeper into your archives.

9. Too Many Assumptions

Never assume your readers aren’t going to bother fact-checking you, because they will, and they’ll kill you in the comments.

Never assume that other blogger you’re gossiping about isn’t going to hear about it, because he will, and he’ll send his followers to kill you in the comments.

Never assume anything with your blog.

10. Sharing A Domain

If you’re serious about developing a huge following and making money with your blog then one of the worst mistakes you can make is to start it up on a shared hosting site like Blogger or WordPress.

Webhosting only costs a few dollars a month.

Start your business off right and get your own domain.

When you're learning how to make money with a blog, you need to understand that the very first step is to create a website. If you want to start your own blog, I have written a step-by-step guide that will show you how to start a blog and make money for as little as $3.95 per month (this low price is guaranteed only through my link). You will also receive your own domain name for free ($15 value) by clicking on this link and purchasing at least 12 months of hosting with BlueHost. Keep in mind that if you're learning how to make money blogging, the first thing you need is your own self-hosted website. It will help you look more professional in front of your visitors, clients, companies, and everyone else.
