Blog Post Scheduling Essential For Maximum Impact

A little time ago I talked about the best time to publish your posts for maximum impact, and since then I seem to be stumbling over all kinds of opinions on this subject. Apparently, every blogger has his own favorite posting times. Since I’ve seen so many different answers I thought it was worth recapping for your enjoyment.

Please note, this is advice I’ve seen around the Web. While I haven’t tested all of these theories myself, they all seem to have some merit, so if you’re trying to increase your traffic, you might give them a try.

If your post has affiliate links – Post at the end of the day so your post has the maximum exposure at the top of your blog.

If you’re guest blogging – If it’s a site over which you have no control, try asking the blogger if he’ll post during one of his peak traffic times. It never hurts to ask. If you’re guest blogging on a site where you do have control, either monitor the site to determine its peak times or aim to be the last post of the day so yours stays at the top over night.

If you’re linking out to another blogger – If you’re trying to grab his attention with your link-out, post during your own peak traffic times or publish at the end of the day so the post stays at the top of your blog.

Publish at 6 am EST – Publish something – anything – at 6 AM EST to get the East Coast U.S. traffic as they’re waking up. If you catch the East Coast crowd they’ll start passing your link and you’ll have strong traffic until 6 pm EST.

Wednesday – The theory here is that by Wednesday everyone’s cleared off all the clutter off their desk, they’ve caught up with work emails and they have a day to spend surfing the web before they have to start preparing for the weekend.

Thursday – If they’re not caught up by Wednesday they will be by Thursday and they’ll have time to read their favorite blogs.

Tuesday – The weekend’s over, they’re back to work, and they’re already caught up with emails. Now they’re bored and they’re ready to surf the Web. Tuesday also makes sense if you consider the Time Zone factor. If you’re blogging in Australia, Monday is Sunday in the U.S. so it makes sense to hold off until Tuesday when it’s actually Monday in the U.S.

Of course, the only way you can know for sure what the best timing for your blog posts is is to watch your analytics and do some testing. There are billions of people online at all hours of the day and night, every single day of the week. With one of my early blogs I found that the best time to post was at 10 am EST Sunday morning, which goes completely against all the advice I’ve ever seen.

Now it’s your turn. Take a look at your most successful post and tell us when you published it. What day of the week? What time? And why do you think it was so successful?

I always find these stats interesting. I have published almost every day in the past and stick now more with Monday through Thursday and sometimes Saturday. I mostly publish before 6 a.m. during the week or around that time. I need to before I head the day job. It just works out that way.
Interesting about the affiliate link posts. I had never thought about that one or seen anything on it. Have you tested that one yourself? Thanks for sharing Steven.

I use this “trick” when I want a post to have more exposure. Usually (this is a rule of thumb, not an absolute), the best content is the first post of the day (so it gets shared more throughout the day), and the last post of the day (so it stays on top of my homepage longer).

I found this to be a provocative article. You’re advice seems logical, so I’m going to follow your suggestions and let you know if I learn something worth sharing. Thanks for providing the information.

This was a really interesting article. I’ll have to try not posting on the weekends and try posting more during the week.
