You know that old saying about beating a dead horse? Well, sometimes your blog is like that dead horse and no amount of beating is going to make it any deader. How do you know when it’s time to let your blog pass peacefully on to the next world? Read on… and put down that stick.
When you have no reason for blogging – If you can’t answer the question, “Why am I blogging?” then don’t. There’s no law that says you have to blog and there’s no law that says you need a blog if you want to make money online. Let it go. You can always start a new one when you want one.
When there’s no return on investment – “Return on investment” can be any number of things – money, exposure, friendships, and so on. You’re investing a lot of time and energy in your blog, and maybe even money if you’re paying for hosting and a domain name. Are you getting what you want out of it? If not, then it’s time to let go.
Do you have the temperament for blogging? – I have a friend who’s a horrible blogger – and she knows it. She’s a very sensitive person and when she sees any kind of indignity online she has to blog about it. Consequently, she’s always in a grumpy mood and it comes through in her writing. She ended her blog and she’s much happier now that she’s not spending so much time reading all that bad news online.
Do you hate blogging? – If you have to force yourself to sit down at your computer every day then maybe blogging’s not for you. And trust me, it’s not for everyone. Those guides make it sound easy and you feel like you’d be crazy for quitting but it’s a lot of work and a lot of writing. If you’re just not into it, let it go. There are plenty of other ways to make money online.
If you’ve run out of things to write about – There are some narrow topics that just aren’t a good fit for a blog. For example, there are only so many things you can say about table-top autoclaves. If you can’t come up with anything new to write about and you can’t broaden the topic or add another category then there’s really nothing you can do. You don’t necessarily have to kill your blog, but there’s no sense hanging around either. Move on to something else.
When life gets in the way – It happens to the best of us. You get a new job, you get married, your find new interests or something happens that takes you away from your blog long enough to make you lose your mojo. Don’t beat yourself up about it. It’s just a blog. Stop feeling guilty and just let it go. You can always start another one in the future if you want to but for now, you’re just stressing yourself out about it and it’s really not worth it.
