Profitable Blog Topic: How To Uncover Golden Nuggets
There are blog topics and there are “profitable” blog topics.
Sometimes they meet somewhere in the middle and sometimes they don’t.
That’s just a fact of life that every blogger has to learn to deal with.
You won’t win with every single blog.
But let me tell you my theory and how I research my own topics, and maybe I can shed some light on this subject for you.
My Theory: Just About Any Topic Can Be Profitable
I do very little research before I set up a new blog and it’s because I think if you’re creative and you know your audience you can make just about any blog topic profitable.
First, it’s important to choose a topic you have an interest in.
If you’re an expert, so much the better because you’ll be more willing to do all the necessary work that goes into building a profitable blog.
You may be interested in a popular topic like International politics or Cruise Vacations or Dogs.
It wouldn’t take much research effort to see that these topics are extremely popular for searchers and they’re already being covered by hundreds of other blogs.
But that doesn’t mean they’re off the table and it doesn’t mean you can’t compete.
On the other hand, you might be interested in a more obscure topic like prokaryotes, little one-celled organisms that lived six million years ago.
You might think there’s no way you could drum up enough traffic to make it worth your while but even a small amount of traffic can be monetized if you use your imagination.
I look at three things before I set up a new blog:
- Will it hold my own interest for the long haul?
- Will I have enough different things to blog about so I can keep adding content?
- If it’s an extremely broad niche, like “Dogs”, what can I do to narrow it and still stay within my area of expertise and interest?
As you can see, all of these questions are relative.
Your answer will undoubtedly be different from mine, but that doesn’t make you wrong and it doesn’t make me right.
Once I’ve answered those questions, I do just a bit of research, nothing fancy.
I’ll use the Google Keyword Tool to check out the number of searches versus competition for the basic keywords and I’ll look at click costs just to gauge advertiser interest.
Next, I’ll actually Google my topic to see what the top competitors look like – how they’re monetized, how they’re promoting and branding themselves, and what types of audiences they’re attracting.
To illustrate how little time I spend on actual, hard-core research, I’ve gone from having the idea to launching a blog in less than three or four hours, and most have turned out to be profitable.
In my opinion, it’s more important to choose your topic and start bringing in some traffic.
Once the traffic starts coming in regularly you can analyze it to see how you can creatively monetize it.
It might be that your best option is Adsense.
It might be affiliate products.
You might even have to get creative and come up with your own products or services.
But, whether it’s 10 people a month or 100000, if you have steady traffic you can generally find a way to make your blog profitable.
