Planning & Earning: How To Do It With a Blog

Those guides all make it sound like you just sit down one day, start a blog, and the next day you’re making money. But it’s not quite that easy. You wouldn’t just decide to build a book store one day and start selling books the next.

The only difference between a blog and book store is the brick and mortar. Other than that, you still have to research, plan, and execute before you can make money. There are a lot of steps from planning to earning with a blog.

Blogging Basics

First you have to learn the basics. What is a blog and how does it work? What makes a blog different from a website and which one is better? Where should you host your blog, what platform should you use, and what should it look like?

Then come the bigger decisions. What should you blog about? How do you research an online market? How do you advertise and where do you find customers? And bigger questions like what should you sell? How should you sell it? And how do you expand your business?

Blog Set Up

All of those questions are just the warm-up to the major action. You were just researching your location and business options. Now, you have to actually set up your blog. You have to start building.

If you’re in this for the long-haul and you plan to make money you’re going to need to pay for web hosting and buy a domain name, which means it’s time to come up with a name for your business. And that means more research. Then you’re going to have to find a theme to house your blog.

Then the fun really starts because it’s time to start stocking your blog with content. Somebody has to write those blog posts and the have to be well-written, informative and unique.

Along the way you’re going to want to add things like opt-in forms so you can start generating a mailing list. And you’ll want to add contact forms so your readers can ask you questions. You’ll need to learn how to find and add images and create videos and infographics. And most important, you’re going to have to learn how to attract, engage, and market to your online audience.

Making Money With Your Blog

Eventually, everything’s going to come together. You’ll understand more about blogging and online marketing, and it will be time to start making money with your blog. At this point, it’s time to sit back and do some more research.

What are people looking for when they come to your blog? How can you fill that need? How do you want to fill that need? Do you want to sell someone else’s products or are you ready to create your own?

As you can see, there’s a lot of work that goes into building a blog from the ground up. And these are just the steps I thought of off the top of my head. There are literally hundreds of decisions you’re going to need to make to get your blog from the planning stage to the point where it’s earning money consistently. But don’t worry. Once it starts earning, your business just keeps growing and growing and growing.

I don’t agree with once you start earning, your money keeps growing and growing as there are far too many factors that can affect your blog. I suggest don’t rely too heavily on just once source of traffic as a sustainable business will do well with visors across a number of different mediums.
