If you have been working on the web for more than a week, you are certainly aware of the fact that you can easily spend hours online without getting anything useful done.

That’s probably one of the main issues since we are working on the internet, we are constantly connected to a network full of “good” reasons to waste time.

online time wasters

Here is a list of 5 time wasters you should stay away from:

  1. Online Newspapers and Magazine: you could probably spend the whole day in front of your computer screen reading the online editions of all the major newspapers out there. Having all these sources of information at your fingertip can make it a real struggle to decide which source of information is worth your time and which one is not. I usually don’t read online wallpapers but I read Google News when I’m in any kind of waiting room.
  2. Forums: The subject of forums is a little bit more complicated. Indeed, there are a lot of forums which can provide useful information for your online business, you can also use them to promote your products or services. On the other hand they can be huge time wasters if you don’t limit yourself.
  3. YouTube: This is one of the most obvious online time wasters. Ok, I get it, this video that your friend just sent you via email is really cute with these little kitties. And this other video with a guy falling off his bike and crushing his balls on an handrail is pretty funny. Now you spent 30 minutes watching some related videos… Don’t you think these 30 would have been more productive if they would have been spent working on your latest project?
  4. Social Bookmarking Sites: Once again, it started innocently by checking one story on the frontpage of Digg, then after a few hours of wandering on this website, you end up reading a story about another conspiracy theory. It’s time to get your shit together and don’t waste your time on useless (even though funny) stories.
  5. Instant Messengers: This one is my Nemesis. Once I log into Facebook chat, Skype and Live Messenger, I know for a fact that I am going to lose a couple hours chatting with friends I have not seen in months. There is no problem chatting… as long as you do it with moderation or else you’ll end up once again spending countless hours being unproductive while chatting with your friends.

You’ll quickly learn that time is one of your most valuable assets and you should do whatever you can to not waste it browsing useless websites.

  1. Abhi Balani (oddblogger)

Agree with all but not with YouTube. These days enjoying Photoshop tutorials on YouTube a lot. But yes it is time waste when we talk about video songs and funny videos stuff.

When I wrote top 5 time sucking websites on my blog, I included Wikipedia also. What say?

  2. Chris

I agree with Abhi, I get sucked into Wikipedia so so easily!

  3. Mitch

Oh man, this is so true. The internet just has so much to offer, it’s so hard to not get distracted. I’m on youtube, skype, facebook, pretty much everything.

  4. Dana

That picture looks like me in my office at home hahaha.

    1. Michelle

Oh honey, you haven’t seen my office. The only place you can see then floor is the pathway to my desk. I’m ashamed to have admitted this in public, online, but I do sympathize with you haha.

  5. Shad

There is definitely a fine line between researching information that will be useful later, and just doing mindless computer stuff. I know that this was the main thing I struggled with when deciding to work from home, it’s all about self-discipline.

    1. Affmaster

The internet is designed to pull you in. It is so vast and endless that you almost literally are sucked in and drowned in it! The key is definitely self-discipline, and realizing when you are wasting your time and snapping out of it!

  6. Liz

LOL@ number 4, that is hilarious! “Get your shit together” made me laugh so hard I scared my dog haha.

  7. Sarah

I know far too many people who do just that: waste hours and hours in front of a computer, all the while getting absolutely nothing done. What’s worse is that some children are being raised to do this same thing. The internet is a marvelous tool, but it can easily be misused and wasted.

  8. Michelle

Instant messaging is a tough one for me as well, and I’d like to post a question: How do you politely end a conversation that another person has started, if you have to get work done, or have to leave and get off the computer but they won’t let you end the conversation?? I have girlfriends that can talk for DAYS and I never know what the best way is to free myself without hurting their feelings… thoughts?

  9. Samie

It’s true that there is a grey area with forums, some are actually filled with very useful information, and could count as research. But you know very well what is the useful kind of forum and what is the useless kind. It all comes back to self-discipline.

Working online requires discipline and avoiding distractions can be very challenging for us. Surfing the internet for non-work related matter is one of the common time wasters at work. You can get really hooked on what you are doing and before you know it, it’s night time and you haven’t done anything productive.
Maybe we should just try to work on one task, after it’s done, we reward ourselves with a little break to check out social media accounts. :)
