If you’re just starting your blogging career then I’m sure you’re saying, “Jeez, what’s the big deal? How hard is it to get the job done and get off the computer?” But trust me, the bigger your business, the more you have to do. At some point, you’ll be glad you I told you how to double your productivity overnight.
OK. Seriously now… here’s my secret: Pretend it’s 1980!
Back in 1980 we didn’t have cell phones cemented into our hands. Heck, some people still didn’t even have a telephone and if they did, it might have been a party line! And they only had one… hanging on the wall… in the kitchen. And if you didn’t want to be bothered by a ringing phone you just took it off the hook and buried it under the sofa cushions.
Back in 1980 when you wanted to remember to do something or pick something up at the store you picked up a pencil and some paper and made a list instead of fumbling around with four different types of business organization software.
Back in 1980 when you had homework to do your mom made you sit at the kitchen table where there were no distractions, like the TV or Radio, and nobody had iPods stuck in their ears or portable DVD players.
Back in 1980 people worked less than 40 hours a week and accomplished more than we do now in 45 or 50 hours. Why is that?
Because it was 1980 and they didn’t have things like Skype, email, Facebook, Twitter, and World of Warcraft!
Now, in case you’re not feelin’ it here, let me break it down for you. To double your productivity over night here’s what you need to do:
- Check email once a day, at the end of the day when you’re feeling less productive. Trust me. It’ll keep.
- Turn off your cellphone, the TV, your iPod, and anything else that makes noise or distracting images.
- Check your social networks once a day, at the end of the day when you have more time to chat and nothing else that needs to be done.
Get yourself a real pencil and some of that stuff called “paper.” You can find both at just about any store around. Even one of those cute little puppy-shaped notepads will do in a pinch. Now, at the end of the day, before you get up from your desk, make a list of everything you need to do tomorrow in order of priority.
When you sit down to work tomorrow have that To-Do list right there in front of you and don’t work on anything else until you’ve marked everything off the list. If by chance you can’t finish, whatever’s left over goes at the top of your list for tomorrow.
I know. It sounds harsh telling you to live like it’s 1980. But your parents survived without all these newfangled contraptions and you will, too. And you’ll probably be twice as productive as you are now!
