Etsy.com – Etsy is a website for people who make and sell handcrafted items. You’ll find everything from handmade jewelry to paintings to stationery, clothing, sculptures – almost anything you can imagine. For each item you list you pay a small listing fee but you control your own pricing and you handle your own shipping.

Ebay.com – Ebay is the famous online auction site and you can list anything you want there. You can also list items with a Buy It Now Price instead of the traditional auction format. Again, you’ll have a small listing fee for each item and you’ll be responsible for shipping and handling. With both Etsy and Ebay, popular sellers can develop quite a following and make very good money.

iStockPhoto.com – If you’re into photography or graphics you can list your photos or drawings at iStockPhoto.com. Like the name says, this is a stock photo website where people from all over the world come to buy stock images and artwork to use for promotional purposes.

Cafepress.com – Cafepress.com is another site that would be suitable for some type of image or graphics work. You can set up your own little Cafepress online store and sell coffe mugs, T-shirt, mousepads, water bottles and all sorts of items that you customize with your own artwork. (This is my personal favorite. I’ve even taken the header from my blog and used it to create custom coffee mugs. It’s a great way to promote your website and it doesn’t cost you a cent!)

Amazon.com – Everybody knows you can buy anything you want at Amazon.com but most people don’t realize that they also have a program for people who want to sell things at Amazon. It’s the largest online marketplace in the world and you can sell any type of artwork you like. Listing fees are deducted at time of purchase and the seller is responsible for shipping and handling.

Elance.com – If you’re into computer graphics or graphic design you can look for freelance design work at sites like Elance.com. There are always plenty of contractors looking for someone to design a new logo or create new graphics for a website.

Get your own blog – If you have the time and interest you can set up your own blog. There’s definitely a learning process involved but many artists have their own blogs and websites. It’s like having your own online gallery. Blogs are great, too, because their very nature encourages people to return, again and again, to see what’s happened since the last time they visited. Start your own blog and before you know it you’ll have your own little crowd of groupies hanging around.

Socialize online – Visit online galleries and get to know the people who run the sites, start making friends on Twitter and Facebook, join artist forums and visit other artists’ blogs. In other words, get out there and start socializing and promoting yourself online, just like you’d do in the offline world. Only now, instead of sending them to a gallery to view your work, you can send them to your website.

When you're learning how to make money selling your own artwork online, you need to understand that the very first step is to create a website.
