What is an inbound call center?
You’ve probably used an inbound call center dozens of times and haven’t even realized it. More and more companies are out-sourcing their customer service calls to call centers. For example, when you want to order something off of one of those infomercials or one of those home shopping networks on TV, you’re speaking to an ‘operator’ who’s working at home.
The advantages for the companies are enormous. It cuts down on employee costs, they don’t have to worry about people calling off, and they save on office space, computers, phone equipment and access lines. No company can completely do away with its customer service department, but by outsourcing it to home based call centers they can save a huge bundle of money.
The advantages for you, of course, are tremendous, too. You can work from the comfort of your own home, in your jammies if you want to. Generally, you’re only required to work a few hours at a time – say, a 4 hour shift. And usually the only special equipment you need is a computer for logging calls and a land line telephone, and possibly a headset to make it easier.
Typically, operators are paid on the number of calls they field, that’s one reason you need a computer. Most companies have you log in when you start working and your calls are counted. When you’re operating a call center for a company like QVC, you also earn commissions on upsells. Which means, if you’re a good sales person, you can make quite a bit of money.
How do you find home-based inbound call center jobs?
They’re every where! Just think of all the places you call and speak to customer service representatives. Most of those reps are working at home! That’s why they can never transfer you to a supervisor or give you more information. They’re working in their jammies in the comfort of their own home!
Seriously though, to find these jobs, start by looking around the websites you visit. When you see sites that say they have a 24 hour assistant online, they’re using a call center. When you visit sites like the Home Shopping Network and QVC and they tell you to call in now to order, they’re using a home call center. The infomercials you see on TV all refer you to a home call center.
You can also find leads online. Visit freelancing sites like Elance.com and search for ‘call center’, or virtual assistant positions. Do a Google search for call center positions, virtual assistants, and also relevant forums.
What you’ll need to start your business
In most all cases you’ll be required to have a land line telephone. A mobile phone or device won’t work because the connection isn’t always perfect. So before you even start looking, you’ll have to decide if this is something you really want to do. You won’t be reimbursed for your monthly phone bill, it comes out of your own pocket.
Most companies will also ask that you get a quality, reliable headset. You’ll be talking on the telephone and working on a computer at the same time. A headset just makes it easier for you to do both. It doesn’t look very professional either when you drop the phone in the middle of a conversation. Even though the company is outsourcing their call center, they still want to maintain a professional appearance.
You’ll also need to be able to commit to a schedule. It may be 2 hours, 4 hours or more, and it may be a couple of days a week or more like a full-time job. That’s up to you but whatever you decide, you need to be able to commit. Which means, puppies and children have to be out of the room during that time and you have to be able to answer the phone every time it rings.
Most companies provide any training materials you need and even teach you how to use their software. Some companies, like QVC, will make you start with low-traffic shifts until you become acquainted with their system. As you progress, and start selling more, they’ll move you up the ranks and give you the better paying shifts.
So, as you can see, it’s very easy to make money online creating a home-based inbound call center. All you need is a computer and a phone. You don’t even have to change out of your jammies!
