The infomercials you see on TV all refer you to a home call center.
You can also find leads online. Visit freelancing sites like Elance.com and search for ‘call center’, or virtual assistant positions. Do a Google search for call center positions, virtual assistants, and also relevant forums.
What you’ll need to start your business
In most all cases you’ll be required to have a land line telephone. A mobile phone or device won’t work because the connection isn’t always perfect. So before you even start looking, you’ll have to decide if this is something you really want to do. You won’t be reimbursed for your monthly phone bill, it comes out of your own pocket.
Most companies will also ask that you get a quality, reliable headset. You’ll be talking on the telephone and working on a computer at the same time. A headset just makes it easier for you to do both. It doesn’t look very professional either when you drop the phone in the middle of a conversation. Even though the company is outsourcing their call center, they still want to maintain a professional appearance.
You’ll also need to be able to commit to a schedule. It may be 2 hours, 4 hours or more, and it may be a couple of days a week or more like a full-time job. That’s up to you but whatever you decide, you need to be able to commit. Which means, puppies and children have to be out of the room during that time and you have to be able to answer the phone every time it rings.
Most companies provide any training materials you need and even teach you how to use their software. Some companies, like QVC, will make you start with low-traffic shifts until you become acquainted with their system. As you progress, and start selling more, they’ll move you up the ranks and give you the better paying shifts.
