WordPress is a great CMS (Content Management System), if not the best CMS out there right now.

You have no idea how many project I have developed using WordPress.

You can basically use it as a wire-frame for every single project.

  • You want to develop a picture gallery? You can do that with WordPress.
  • You want to develop a price comparison website? You can do that with WordPress.
  • You want to create landing pages? You can do that with WordPress.

One of the awesome things with WordPress is it’s popularity. So many people are using it, that the community of developers working on it is tremendous. As a consequence, whenever you have an idea and you need a specific tool, there is a big chance that someone already figured out a way to achieve what you are looking for, and probably developed a plugin for that.

There are some WordPress Plugins that are project specific, and there are the WordPress plugins that I use on every project I’m launching with this CMS. Let’s jump into the list.

  1. Auto Tags

    • This plugin uses the Yahoo.com and tagthe.net APIs to find the most relevant keywords from the content of your post, and then adds them as tags.
    • An option page allows to choose how many tags are retrieved from each service.
    • The tag adding is fully automatic, so if you’re using a plugin like feedwordpress to display RSS feeds on your blog as posts, everything will get done as the feed posts are published.
    • No user intervention necessary!

  2. Breadcrumb NavXT

    • Breadcrumb NavXT generates locational breadcrumb trails for your WordPress blog. These represent the hierarchy leading up to the current page rather than the actual path taken to arrive at the current page.
    • Breadcrumb trails are a good supplementary navigation system that aid in site usability. This is especially true for sites using WordPress as a CMS.
    • Since Breadcrumb NavXT reveals the page hierarchy in a consistent manner, it can provide SEO benefits.
    • This website runs Breadcrumb NavXT, browse the various sections to see how Breadcrumb NavXT behaves.

  3. Contextual Related Posts

    • Display Related Posts automatically in content / feed, no need to edit template files
    • Doesn’t require the post to be tagged in order to display related posts
    • You can manually add code to your template where you want the related posts to be displayed
    • Exclude posts from categories
    • Exclude display of related posts on Pages
    • Exclude links pages in Related Posts list
    • Find related posts based on content and post title

  4. Google XML Sitemaps

    • This plugin will generate a special XML sitemap which will help search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo and Ask.com to better index your blog.
    • With such a sitemap, it’s much easier for the crawlers to see the complete structure of your site and retrieve it more efficiently.
    • The plugin supports all kinds of WordPress generated pages as well as custom URLs.
    • Additionally it notifies all major search engines every time you create a post about the new content.
