Email Marketing Basic: What is Email Marketing?
Email marketing is where you send message directly to a person’s inbox, usually advertising a product or service that you have available. The success of any email marketing campaign hinges heavily on the strength and size of the list that an individual has available to them.
When it comes to email marketing, you’ll not succeed without a list – so before you even think about sending your first message, you must first think about how you’re going to get people to join your mailing list.

How does it work?
Email marketing isn’t something that you do through Gmail or even Outlook – for email marketing you use a specialist platform such as AWeber or MailChimp. These platforms allow you to build marketing lists and send out messages to them.
These services also allow you to send out auto-responders too – which are basically pre-written messages that will be sent to your subscribers at set intervals.
You can get people to join your list in a whole manner of different ways – once you’ve got them to subscribe, you can start to think about what you’re going to market to them. Remember there’s no point spamming advertising messages at these people – all they have to do is click “unsubscribe” and they’re gone forever, so make sure you treat your list like royalty.
Be very selective of the messages you send out, and of course be very specific about the products that you promote.
Selling other people’s products using email marketing
The great thing about email marketing is that you don’t have to have your own products to sell – you could always sell someone else’s! Networks like Clickbank allow you to gain commissions each time a person buys through your affiliate link – so if you have a healthy little list, but nothing to promote, why not think about doing some affiliate marketing to your email list?
What a lot of people fail to realize is that you don’t necessarily have to have your own email list, in order to participate in email marketing. Many people participate in Solo Ad schemes: a Solo Ad is basically where you pay someone who owns a list a fee to send out your message to their subscribers.
Although the fee for sending out Solo Ads is normally pretty high, the returns can be huge once people read your message.
For those people lucky enough to have a list, there’s also Ad Swaps. An Ad Swap is basically where two people with a list come together: these people then send a message to each other’s list – promoting a product or service they have on sale, or asking them to join their personal list.
Email marketing is a very complex world – but ultimately a very rewarding one. You need to make sure that you do things in an ethical and legal manner when it comes to email marketing, because there are lots of laws and regulations such as the CAN-SPAM Act which are in place to protect consumers.
Operate inside the law and use a professional email marketing platform and you’ll find it to be very, very profitable.
