It’s hard to believe, but Dukeo is already 2 years old…

When you are running a successful blog like Dukeo, I think it’s essential to take a step back on a regular basis to analyze your results, see what worked and what didn’t, then set goals for the upcoming year.

This is exactly what this post is about: taking a little time to write about what happened in my personal life in the past 12 months, and give some key numbers about Dukeo’s 2 years blog life.

You can use this data as a reference for your own blog.

second anniversary

Personal Life

On a personal level, the past 12 months have been very exciting. I moved from Paris, France to Hong Kong. Being here allowed me to travel to several asian countries such as Philippines and Indonesia. Along the way, I met a LOT of new people and I had to work on my English skills (Like it or not, English IS the universal language).

I lived in 4 different places since I arrived here: an hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui East, a serviced apartment in Fortress Hill, a shared apartment in Sai Ying Pun and a serviced apartment in Central.

While it’s very exciting to keep moving all the time, it’s also extremely exhausting.

I’m planning to find a place where I’ll be staying for at least 12 months in a row (big challenge for me since I love traveling).

Blogging Life

Running Dukeo is a very demanding experience.

Blogging is NOT a “get rich quick” scheme. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication to build an audience and create a relationship with readers.

You should also keep in mind that running this blog is just a part of my business and clearly not the most interesting one money-wise, but I’m thinking long-term with this project, so I keep investing more and more time to make it grow.

In the 2 years of Dukeo, I have published a total of 1,384 posts: that’s an average of 1.89 posts per day. Of these, 889 posts were published on the second year of Dukeo. It’s hard to believe that I was able to post over 2.42 posts per day for the past 12 months.

And these 1,384 posts received a total of 6,561 comments: that’s 4.74 comments per post. This number is not really fantastic, but don’t forget that in the early months of Dukeo, I posted a LOT of content that received almost 0 comments.

During this second year, Dukeo has been serving 422,969 Pageviews to 196,751 Unique Visitors. Compared to its first year, that’s a 281,53% increase in Pageviews and a 314.64% increase in Unique Visitors.

This is quite interesting to multiply traffic by 4 in a year, but I plan to do even better with Dukeo’s third year.

When you’re doing your blog promotion the right way, there is some kind of snowball effect: once you reach a certain size, the traffic starts growing on its own.

That’s exactly what’s been happening to Dukeo in the past 3 months.

It looks like I was able to reach some kind of Tipping Point and things have been growing even faster from this point on.

Since I’m starting to get a decent number of monthly pageviews, I’m thinking of putting some advertising banners on my pages.

Don’t freak out, I’m not going to turn Dukeo into a Christmas tree, and my goal is always to provide good content in a clear manner, so it shouldn’t be too intrusive.

It might be an interesting experiment to see what kind of income it will bring without any additional work.

Thank you!

I’d like to use this opportunity to give a huge thank you to all of Dukeo’s readers for helping this blog grow. Dukeo wouldn’t be where it is right now if you weren’t here.

Once again, thank you! Let’s go for another (even more) successful year!

Congratulations Steven and great work with Dukeo! :)

    1. Thanks Luke! I’m doing my best.

  2. Andi The Minion

I love this blog and it has helped me out in many ways, I try and visit at least once a day and see what is happening but with me following you on Twitter that is pretty easy now as I see you and many others tweeting your posts. I am just a click away.

Congratulations on an excellent two years, and for living a lifestyle many want :-) and here is to the next year…

    1. Thanks a lot for the nice words Andi. Next year is going to be even better!

  3. Elliott Scott

Congratulations on entering year three! I’m excited to see how Dukeo handles with a banner or two. Your site is an example for a lot of us!

    1. Thank you Elliott!

Advertising is not going to disrupt the user experience in any way… At least I’ll try to make it that way.

  4. Jacob Curtis

Thanks for providing some insight to your personal life Steven and making us all feel jealous we’re stuck in the office while you’re out traveling the world!

When I wrote my blog article reviewing your site for the contest you held, I referenced how you started off small and your blog wasn’t an overnight success. It’s hard work and dedication that got you there so I’m happy you recognize that too.

You keep me (and others I’m sure) inspired to get on your level and when you put milestones and benchmarks in terms of years it makes me feel like I should take a step back from checking my site’s metrics everyday.

Hope you had a chance to read my review!

Cheers to a successful year 3!

    1. Of course I read your review Jacob :) I did my homework in order to pick the winning review and I read all of them several times.

I feel very fortunate to be able to travel the world, and I am conscious that it took me several years before being able to enjoy my life this way.

The internet lifestyle is one of the main reasons for me to pick this line of work… I just need a laptop and an internet connection.

Thanks for your nice words and best of luck with your blog too!

  5. Congrats Steven, that is a nice year 2.

I will be interested to see what you do with advertising. As someone who buys advertising for a living, the yield opportunities are definitely in direct selling or creation of sponsorship and other non-traditional units.

    1. For a couple days, I’m just going to run some Adsense to see what kind of CPM I get. Then I’ll probably switch for some direct ad sales and affiliate promotions.

  6. Monica

Congratulations on two years!! I come by most everyday, thanks so much for all your hard work. I’ve learned a lot, and can’t wait to see what’s in store for year three :)

BTW – Love the site update, looks good!

    1. Thanks for being a regular visitor Monica :)

(There is a search box now! hehe)

    2. Monica

You’re welcome, seriously, there’s just so much useful information, I can’t pull myself away.

Awesome, Steven that’s *JUST* what the site needed =D

  7. Delia @ Blog Formatting

Congrats, Steven! Wow I already like the newly, improved dukeo.com website :) Wishing you great success in the future!

    1. I’m glad you like it Delia! This new version of the site is all thanks to the feedback I received during the review contest :)

  8. Rconnoriii

    Wow Steven!,
That is some writing pace, did you get anytime to yourself? Your drive shows… Have a great day on purpose!

    1. Not really Robert. Minimal social life and sleep deprivation. :)

  9. Ross Quintana (@ross_quintana)

Congrats, Steven, I just finished my first year and I am also happy with my results. I agree there is a tipping point and comments are a good indicator. It takes a while to get real fans of your content. Nice job!

    1. Absolutely Ross. It’s good to see that once you start getting traction, things start working by themselves.

  10. Marty

Congrats on your success . Happpy birthday Dukeo!

    1. Thanks Marty

  11. Congratulations, Steven! We’re practically twins! The Wonder of Tech turned two last week.

I am constantly amazed at both the quality and quantity of your work. You should be very proud of all you have accomplished and the many people you have helped during your two years.

    Well done.

    1. Thank you Carolyn for all the nice words. And congratulations on your anniversary too :)
