Declutter: Remove Unnecessary Information From Your Blog

Your blog is a piece of Real Estate – Internet Real Estate. As such, every inch is valuable and it should be productive, either directly or indirectly. If you have something on your blog that isn’t adding to your bottom line, then it’s either wasting valuable space or worse – it could be keeping your readers from finding the real value in your blog. Here are some tips to help you identify and remove unnecessary information from your blog.

Banners and Ads: People are blind to most ads these days, especially if your blog is cluttered with banners in every nook and cranny. Get rid of them, they’re a distraction. Analyze each ad you have on your blog and see if it’s making you money. It doesn’t matter if you “think” it will make money. If it’s not “actually” making you money then it’s wasting space and distracting your readers.

Badges: Some sites offer you badges for your site to prove you’re an expert author or a member of some club. Some of these are required for participation and you have to have that code on your site or you’ll be locked out. Analyze the benefits before you add these to your sidebar. If you have to have them but they’re not going to produce, consider placing them in the footer where they won’t be seen.

Calendars: Unless you’re blogging about time sensitive topics you don’t need a calendar on your blog. Visitors don’t care that you posted two months ago or two weeks ago. They just want to see what you posted today.

Irrelevant Content: I’ll be you didn’t know that having irrelevant content on your blog can actually hurt your ranking. If you’re blogging about dog care then get rid of all those blog posts that talk about your camping trips – unless they’re specifically related to dog care. When a searcher comes to your blog looking for camping information and sees that most of your content is about dog care he’s going to leave your site. And eventually the search engines notice. If you absolutely must talk about camping, start a camping blog.

Author Information: If you’re the only writing on your blog then get rid of that author information at the end of every post. Set up an about me page and if your readers really want to know they’ll find it. Otherwise, all that extra stuff at the end is just a distraction.

Meta Data: Nobody really needs that meta data in your sidebar – even you. Delete it and free up that space for something more profitable.

Recent Comments: Your most recent comments are probably on your most recent post, and your readers are going to find that anyway. Get rid of the recent comments and manually add links to your most popular or most informative content and lead your readers where you really want them to go.

Blog Roll: It’s nice that you’re sharing your favorite blogs but you’re not doing anyone any favors by hiding those links over in the sidebar. If you really want to highlight your favorites, set up a category for “Favorite Blogs” and blog about them. The link juice will be more valuable to those other blogs, and you and those other bloggers will develop a stronger network.

    …yet in a prior blog post, you advocate using them “above the fold.”

    1. Howard, as I replied on the other post, it depends on a lot of factors: industry, quality of content, general design, how you blend (or not) your ads in the design, what kind of advertising you use.

    I’m with you in thinking that far too many sites and Blogs are just way to cluttered and that only takes away from your ability to focus attention. To many ads popups and widgets just make them all fail to do more than irritate your visitors.
