Catchy Articles: 11 Simple Tips To Write Them
It’s not easy writing articles that grab your readers’ attention, day after day after day. But, if you want to make money online, that’s what it’s all about. You don’t have to be an award winning author but you do need to learn some basic writing skills. After all, no matter what you’re blogging about, you’re competing against dozens of other blogs. Here are 11 simple tips to help you write catchy articles.
1/ Don’t hold back
Start off with a strong title and a strong opening paragraph. Let the reader know exactly what you’re talking about and how the information is going to benefit them. It’s not enough to say, “I’m going to teach you how to change the oil in your car.” You need to tell them how this information is going to help them. “Never pay a mechanic again! You’ll save hundreds of dollars every year when you learn how to change the oil in your car yourself.”
2/ Read other blogs
One way to improve your writing skills is to read more. If you’re reading other blogs not only will you pick up writing tips, you’ll learn more about your niche and about the blogging business, so you’ll be killing two or three birds with one stone.
3/ Practice writing
You may never be a Stephen King or Bentley Little but your writing will improve with practice, so just start writing. If nothing else, you can publish those practice articles in an article directory and build some backlinks.
4/ Eliminate unnecessary words
Speaking of Stephen King… In his book, “On Writing”, King says to write your article and then go back and remove all the adverbs and most of the adjectives. Most of the time they’re just taking up space. When you’re writing for the online reader you need to make your point fast because attention spans are short.
5/ Create excitement
Nobody wants to sit down and read an encyclopedia. Create some excitement with words. “Wait till you see this amazing trick!” “I’ve got a tip that’s going to blow your mind!” “You’re not going to believe what I saw over at…!” Get your readers excited and they’ll never leave your blog.
6/ Use emotion
Use words that create emotions for your readers. Excitement has its place, but so does outrage if you’re a political blogger, or humor if you’re a mommy blogger. Use an online thesaurus to help you choose words to emotionally charge your articles.
7/ Use images
Sometimes a picture really is worth a thousand words and, at the very least, images can help you illustrate a concept.
8/ Be concise
You have about three seconds before your readers drift off into la-la land. Use them wisely. Get rid of extra words, use bullet points and headers to direct the eye, and most important – get to the point.
9/ Write a good conclusion
Most online readers only really scan your article, no matter how much effort you put into the writing. For that reason, it’s important to write a strong lead paragraph that grabs their attention, and even more important to write a strong conclusion that wraps everything up.
10/ Talk to your audience
Don’t “write” to your audience, “talk” to them, just like you’d talk to a friend. In fact, if I’m writing a how-to article, I often picture myself talking to one specific person and I imagine the questions they might be asking.
11/ Be unpredictable
If you always write how-to articles, change it up today and write an opinion piece. Better yet, talk about a controversial issue that’s brewing in your niche. Or go to Fiverr and hire someone to draw a funny cartoon for a post next week, or hire someone to make a video. Do something unpredictable and completely unexpected every now and then so your readers don’t get bored.
