Career Choice: Is Blogging The Right Path For You?
If you’re putting the words “blogging” and “career” in the same sentence then you’re already miles ahead of most of the people who call themselves bloggers. You’ve already made the connection that, like any other career choice, blogging takes a large measure of commitment. And, like any other career, blogging has its pros and cons. Let’s take a look.
Pro – Anyone Can Do It
All the ads say anyone can make a career out of blogging and in a way they’re right. You don’t need any special knowledge or skills to get started and most blogging platforms are designed so beginners can have a blog up and running in just a few minutes. However…
Con – There’s A Learning Curve
Remember, we’re talking about your career, here, not just a hobby. If you want to build a long-term money-making business you’re going to have a lot to learn. You need to learn how the Internet Marketplace works, how to choose your market, how to target an audience, how to promote, how to build a robust website, and so much more.
Pro – There’s Plenty Of Room For Everyone
The Internet Marketplace is unimaginably vast and there’s plenty of room for everyone. While it’s true that there’s no such thing as an undiscovered niche anymore, it’s still easy enough to compete if you’re creative and have a unique selling perspective. However …
Con – You Need To Have A Plan
Those blogging guides make it sound like all you have to do is set up a blog and watch the money roll in, but every successful blogger will tell you you need to have a business plan. You need to know how you want to make money with your blog and what market you want to target. Then you need a plan for attacking that market.
On the plus side, it doesn’t cost much at all to start a blog, so if you don’t get it right the first time you can just start over again with a new blog.
Con – It Takes A Lot Of Time And Effort
It’s not really a “con” but it is a fact, one that a lot of bloggers over look: Building any kind of successful business takes a lot of time and effort, including a blog. And there’s really no way of predicting how much time it will take for your blog to start making money.
Some bloggers will tell you that it takes at least 6 months of concentrated effort before your blog starts producing income but there are so many variables to consider like how much time do you have to spend working on your blog and how much do you already know about blogging and marketing. And some people just naturally learn faster than others.
However … If you’re willing to put in the time and the effort, then yes, you can make a career out of blogging.
Pro – You Can’t Beat The Internet Lifestyle
You absolutely can’t beat the blogging lifestyle. You can literally set your own schedule and work from anywhere you like. You can run your business any way you choose, and just the fact that you’ll have a business you can call your own, with no boss breathing down your neck and no time clock to punch, makes all the hard work worth it.
But personally, I think the best thing about blogging is that you don’t have to choose one career path because, after a while, that gets a little boring. Once you learn how to make money with your blog you can get creative and branch out into several different career paths, building an even stronger, more successful business.
