Traditionally, we associate “scoops” with news sites and bloggers seem to come in after the fact and write the opinion pieces. But scoops are important for bloggers, too.

What Is A Scoop?

When you report a scoop that means you’re the first one to publish information about a newsworthy event. The problem is, many bloggers don’t realize that newsworthy events occur in every niche, every day.

For example, if you’re blogging about dogs, there’s a dog show or a dog food recall or a dog abuse scandal every day of the week. If you’re blogging about babies there are baby formula recalls, dangerous toy alerts and celebrity babies being born every day. These are all examples of scoops that could be used on your blog.

Where Do You Find A Scoop?

Just like a newspaper reporter you have to cultivate your resources. Make connections with advertisers and manufacturers and get on the press release mailing lists. Network with other bloggers in your niche and share information. Connect with your readers because you never know what they might trip over.

I also use a few online resources. Monitor industry websites. Set up Google Alerts. And keep you ear to the ground in your favorite social networks. Scoops are out there. You just have to look for them and be in the right place at the right time.

What Can A Scoop Do For Your Blog?

Prestige: When Woodward and Bernstein broke the Watergate story they become instant celebrities. It’s much harder to break a scoop these days because it only takes minutes for news to travel all over the Web. But if you can do it, you’ll be a star. Heck, you might win a Pulitzer Prize!

Inbound Links: If they can’t be the one who breaks the news, those other sites will link to you and cite you as the source. Imagine having incoming links from all the major news websites and blogs around the world!

As time passes and the news trickles down you’ll see links coming in from A-list bloggers and secondary sites, too. Everybody wants to link to the original source of information.

Greater Search Engine Visibility: When it comes to newsworthy content, index position goes to the first person to post, regardless of page rank. This also increases the number of sites that link to you simply because you’re at the top of the list. It doesn’t last long so you have to act fast.

If you publish fast enough, you might also be picked up by the Google News bots which means your post will be blasted out to anyone who’s set a Google Alert for that particular topic.
