Nobody becomes a successful blogger overnight. Even the big-name bloggers who started out years ago, when blogging was still in its infancy, had to eventually come up with some kind of a business plan to keep up with changes in the marketplace. If you want to make money with your blog, then you’re going to need a business plan, a roadmap for success.

A lot of people are led astray by those guides that say anyone can make money with a blog, you can make thousands of dollars your first month online, and all you have to do is set up a blog and start blogging.

Some of those guides really do offer you valuable advice. They give you tips on how to get traffic or how to write articles. Some tell you how to actually set up a blog or how to build a list.

But none of those guides tells you that you have to treat your blog like a business. They make it all sound so easy, but this is the one area of blogging where most bloggers get tripped up. Anyone can build a blog. But if you want to make money with it then you have to have a business plan.

Let’s say you decide you want to make money with a gardening blog because you love to garden. That’s great, but there are about a thousand other bloggers out there with the same idea. You can blog about soil and seeds and green thumbs all you want but if you don’t have a roadmap you’re just… a blogger.

The first thing you need to do with your gardening blog is determine what sets you apart from those other bloggers. What value can you offer your readers?

Typically, people find the most value in information and products that fill their needs and wants or solve problems. So, instead of just blogging about your day-to-day gardening experiences, you’ll want to provide information that fills a specific need for your readers.

This information can take many forms. You might want to focus your blog on how to grow award winning roses or organic vegetable gardening. To decide which direction you’re going, you’ll want to consider your own area of expertise and the needs of the marketplace.

Before a businessman decides to open a restaurant he researches various locations to analyze the traffic, he studies the demographics of the neighborhood to find out their menu preferences, and he scouts out the competition to see how he can carve out his own niche. He also makes financial decisions based on informed business projections.

Yet, for some reason, new bloggers think all they have to do is just start blogging and the money will roll in. As you can see, there’s a lot more to blogging than just installing a WordPress theme and typing up a blog post every day. If you want to make money online with a blog then you need to treat it like any other business and map out a plan of action.

Absolutely! I admit it, in the past I’ve “thrown open the doors” to a blog expecting followers to just trip over me. But that didn’t help me, and that didn’t help the people I wanted to help.

Now that I’m in the launch stages of my site to teach personal project management to people, your words ring truer than ever before. Starting any business, online or brick-and-mortar, requires research, a plan, a strategy, and ongoing management. Following your advice and my own principles this time around.

    1. Best of luck with your new online venture Kimboo!

I’ve been “blogging” for almost a year now and I haven’t made the thousands of dollars some experts claim one can make. I’m glad I went into this with no expectation to make such an income so fast, otherwise I would have been setup for a major let-down.

I agree having a plan to monetize a blog is important, just as important as having original content with the “it factor” to set it apart from other blogs in the same niche.

    Have a great weekend.

    1. Thanks for your comment Corina. It’s important to remember that the bloggers who are the most successful are usually the ones who didn’t get into this line of work for money
