Blog Types: 3 Types of Blogs and How to Handle Them
Everywhere you turn you see sales pages that say anyone can make money blogging and everyone needs a blog. After a while you start to believe you really are the Lone Ranger and you better get busy setting up a darn blog. But what does that mean – set up a blog? Why do you need one and what kind of blog do you need? Here are 3 types of blogs and 3 ways to handle them.
Blogging to promote your business
There’s a whole group of bloggers out there who don’t really care if they make money blogging. They’re using their blogs to support their business. Blogs are a great way to drive traffic to a small business website, whether your small business is online or off.
Local small businesses, such as service providers, attorneys, Real Estate Agents, etc, can garner huge benefits from a blog. A simple website with 5 or 6 pages may only appear in the search engine indexes 5 or 6 times. But a blog increases your visibility because each post has its own URL. Blogs rank better with the search engines too because they’re constantly being updated with fresh, unique content. Setting up a blog to promote your small business makes it easier for the people in your town to find you.
Blogs are also a great way to drive traffic to an online business, like your Ebay site or your MLM site or if you provide some type of online service such as link building or content creation. Use your blog to link to your business pages and profiles and the links you create will help improve your ranking. Don’t forget to vary your anchor text so your links look natural to the search engines.
It’s difficult to establish that you’re an authority on a particular topic with just a website. They just aren’t set up for you to personally engage with your readers. A blog helps you connect using comments, social sharing and because you can add fresh content to keep your readers interested. You can establish yourself as the Go-To guy with a blog and you’ll pass that authority on to your website.
Blog for search engine optimization
What better way to get the backlinks you want then to put them on your own blog? If you’re trying to pull up the rank on a sales page or beat out some competition for a particular keyword, use sites like Blogger.com or WordPress.com or even Squidoo or HubPages to build links for exactly the keywords you want to rank for and place them wherever you want on the page.
It’s important to use quality content no matter where you’re posting on the Internet. Your website, your blog, HubPages. You’re using that content to increase traffic and improve your rankings so it has to be good solid content. And again, be sure to vary your anchor text and occasionally link to another site somewhere so your links look natural.
Blogging to make money with your blog
This is the main reason that people start blogs and it’s not always a pretty site. There is so much to learn about creating a successful, money making blog and most people who decide to do it chose the how to make money blogging niche. That’s the worst thing you can do! Not only are there already millions of bloggers competing in that niche, but you don’t yet know how to make money blogging, so how can you expect to be an authority in that niche?
The fact is, anybody can make money with a blog and it doesn’t cost much to get started. And even if you know nothing about blogging, you can learn as you go.
