Blog Outsourcing: When Should You Consider It?
You’re probably thinking that you shouldn’t even consider outsourcing unless you can afford it. But you can always barter services or products, so let’s put the issue of money aside for now.
Lots of the big name bloggers talk about outsourcing content and outsourcing website design but they don’t talk about how and when they decided it was time to consider outsourcing. Here’s what I think…
When you absolutely can’t do it yourself
I think it’s important that you know how to do everything associated with your online business, from coding to writing to designing. Otherwise, how can you tell someone else how you want the job done?
That said, I also understand that not everyone is a whiz at graphic design and some people just will never understand html. If you’ve given it your best shot and it still isn’t working – Hire someone.
When you don’t have the specialized knowledge
Some things require specialized knowledge. For example, there’s a psychological aspect to the colors you use to design your website. And, while I understand html and CSS, I certainly could never design a whole website myself. If your success depends on a specialized skill or knowledge and you don’t have it – Hire someone who does.
When your time would be better spent on something else
In the beginning it took me days to set up a blog. And I’ve completely lost more than one database trying to move a blog all by myself. But that was in the beginning – when I didn’t have anything else I needed to be working on, and when the loss wasn’t really that substantial.
Now I can do those things in the blink of an eye and I don’t have to pay somebody to do them for me. So the investment of time – AT the time – was well worth it.
On the other hand, if I’d hired someone in the beginning to install and transfer blogs for me, I’d still have to hire someone to do it today because I no longer have a few days to invest in learning something like that. Had I not forced myself to learn these basic skills in the beginning, they’d be an ongoing business expense now.
Have I stopped learning new things now that my business has grown? On the contrary. I allot a few hours each week to learn something new that will improve my business.
So how much outsourcing do I do myself? I pick and choose wisely. I only outsource if I know the service provider will be able to deliver something at least as good or better than I could do myself, considering the amount of time I have to devote to the project and my own skill and knowledge levels.
I still firmly believe it’s best to at least know how to do it yourself. But I’m also a good business person. At some point your business just gets too large and you have to start outsourcing or you won’t be able to keep up.
