Blog Investing: Bet On Your Own Success
A lot of people get into blogging because there’s very little money involved. Just a few bucks for a domain name and web hosting, which is pretty cheap when you compare it to the start-up costs for a brick-and-mortar business. Eventually, like any other business, you’re going to need to invest some money so you can blog smarter, not harder. Here are some tips for investing in your own blogging success.
Invest In A Premium Theme
I used a popular free WordPress theme for a long time because I didn’t want to spend money for a premium theme. In my mind it just wasn’t worth the investment because I had enough skills to customize my free theme and make it do just about anything I wanted. Just about.
But here’s the thing… This particular theme was perfect except for this little glitch in the text editor. It went all wonky whenever I tried to format bullet points and numbered lists. In the beginning I was only posting once a day so it was no big deal to switch over the the html view and clean up the code.
But then I increased my posting frequency to four and five times a day and it seemed like it was taking forever to get a post loaded up, formatted and published because I had to keep fixing the html. So this free theme was actually costing me a lot of time each day, and we all know Time Equals Money.
When I finally came to that realization it made perfect sense to invest in a premium theme that came with support to help me with any problems I might have. It cost less that $200 and it’s saved me hundreds of hours in posting time.
Invest In Real Web Hosting
Shared hosting is inexpensive and it works… for a while. But when your blog starts getting some real traffic you can run into problems. To many visitors at once, too many page views, too many vidoes or images, and BAM! Your site crashes. Just when you start making money.
Get dedicated VPS hosting, or better yet get a dedicated server so you never have to worry about traffic and bandwidth again. VPS hosting provides dedicated functionality on a shared hosting site and it starts at around $16 a month. Want more security? Get a dedicated server for less than $140 a month.
Invest In A Quality Email Service Provider
Now that I think about it I should have put this at the top of the list. If you’re a blogger you’re going to be building a list. You should be building a list from the very beginning. That list is valuable and you need to protect it. Invest in a quality email service provider.
First, an email service provider like Aweber, will require your subscribers to confirm their subscription before they can receive your emails. This is for your protection so nobody can accuse you of spam.
Second, Aweber provides you with more stats than you’ll ever need so you can monitor and tweak your email campaigns.
Aweber also analyzes your emails before you hit Send to let you know if you’re in danger of setting off any Spam filters. Additionally, you can send broadcast emails to all or a portion of your list and you have the capability of setting up autoresponder series that run from now through the end of time.
You can’t do any of this with your standard email service, or the email accounts provided with your Web hosting. That list you’re building is one of your most valuable business assets. Invest in a quality email service provider and protect it.
