Blog Hate: 9 Tips To Make You Love Your Own Blog Again
It happens to the best of us. You’re blogging along, minding your own business, and ever so slowly you start to get this… feeling. It sneaks up on you, one cautious step at a time. It might take years, or it might only take months. But one morning you wake up and it’s there, sitting on your chest, staring into your eyes, ready to pounce. You absolutely loathe your blog and you can’t bear the thought of looking at it for even one more day!
What to do? You can’t just abandon your blog, you’ve put too much heart and soul into it. And you really like being a blogger, just not right now and just not this blog. Here are nine steps to take to help you fall in love with your blog again.
1. Get a spiffy, new design
When’s the last time you changed your blog design? Think about it – you look at that same background, that same header, and those same tired banners in the sidebar every single day – all day long. Get yourself a new theme or, at the very least, move your banners around and put a shiny, new opt-in form in the sidebar. Give your blog a makeover and you’ll feel more like showing it off again.
2. Narrow your focus
About three years ago I was in this same predicament. I loathed my blog, too. After giving it some thought for a few days I realized that if I just narrowed my focus I’d attract less traffic, but the traffic I did attract would be extremely targeted. And it worked. Try narrowing your focus to pull in one tightly targeted group of readers and cater to their every need.
3. Blog when you feel like blogging
Sometimes, trying to maintain a rigid posting schedule is the worst thing you can do. If you’re forcing yourself to write to a schedule every day it can start to sound forced, and it can feel forced to the blogger. If you loathe your blog right now, forget about the posting schedule and blog when you feel like blogging, when you get that old creative urge to write something truly remarkable.
4. Create something
Few bloggers make a six-figure income from their blogs, they make it because of their blogs. Create something you can sell or promote on your blog. Write that ebook you’ve been planning. Make your own beaded bracelets instead of promoting that affiliate product. Sell your own homemade soap or promote your freelance business.
5. Get out of your rut
Do everything different today. Check your stats at the end of the day instead of first thing in the morning. Save your emails for the afternoon. Write your blog posts first – while you’re still in bed! Change your routine and shake it up a little. You might find you like your new routine even better.
6. Blog in a different location
Go to the coffee shop, go to the library, go to the park or just move into the living room. Change your scenery for the day and you’ll get a whole new perspective.
7. Read something new
Don’t read the same old blogs at all today. Go find something new to read. Buy a newspaper or magazine, download a new book to your Kindle or check out a blog you’ve never read before. Don’t read more, just read something new.
8. Find your inspiration
If you’re looking for steps to help you get over loathing your blog then that must mean you want to continue blogging. Why? What is it that you like about blogging? What inspires you to keep blogging, day after day? What is your blogging goal?
9. Take a step back
If you’re loathing your blog that probably means things aren’t going as well as you hoped. Maybe it’s time to step back and take a long, hard look at your business. What are your goals? What are you doing to achieve those goals? And, more important…
Is it time to kill this blog? Killing your blog doesn’t mean you failed as a blogger. Quite the contrary. It means you’re actually skilled enough now to recognize everything that’s wrong with that blog and that there’s no possibility to save it, so why waste the time and effort?
Killing your blog can be a smart move, but the most important thing you need to do is find out why you really loath your blog, first.
