Affiliate Summit West 2012 @ Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas – Terrible Jetlag

Hey everyone, I had already made it public on Twitter and Facebook, but I thought I should post a short update on the blog regarding Affiliate Summit West.

I’ve been wanting to attend to live events for some time now but I was too overwhelmed with work last summer so I haven’t been able to go to Affiliate Summit East in New York. This time, I was able to have a more organized schedule and free a couple days to fly to Las Vegas for Affiliate Summit West 2012.

It has been more than 6 months since I took a single day off so I decided to come a few days early to Las Vegas and relax before the show’s beginning.

As a matter of fact, this was a very good decision but for another reason… I landed in Las Vegas 2 days ago and experienced the worst jetlag I ever had. I usually take a couple drinks to hammer me on the first night after landing to get to sleep and get over the jetlag. However this time it only made it worse. I’ve been in a half-sleep state all day long yesterday but after sleeping for more than 14 hours, I am now feeling great.

Being my first time at a live event, I didn’t plan a very busy schedule because I want to have time to take a step back and relax whenever I want. Moreover, I haven’t been checking the sessions’ planning before today. This may sound a little weird to buy a platinum pass to such an event without even checking what’s going to happen, but from what I heard, the real value of this kind of events is in the face-to-face networking opportunities. This is the reason why I have dinners and parties planned for every single night starting tomorrow.

Now, don’t misunderstand me. There is probably some value to take away from the sessions and I’ll be sitting there and listening as much as possible. It’s just not my top priority. I’m way more excited by the opportunity of meeting face-to-face with Shawn Collins, Missy Ward, Ian Fernando, Jeremy Shoemoney, Brian Evans, Luke Kling, DK, Jim Kukral… To list only a few.

I’ll try to post updates about the show, the sessions and the parties but I do not want to commit too much as I don’t know how I’ll handle the fast-pace of the show.

If you want to have more frequent updates, I invite you to follow me on Twitter @dukeo since I’ll probably be live-tweeting some of the sessions.

I’m leaving you for now. It’s time to go get some drinks and enjoy some free-time before the real fun begins.

Stay tuned!

I always get the most terrible jetlag, it’s so so awful. I usually take a couple of benadryl to knock me out, or emergen-C to keep me awake. It’s tough on the system, but I’m so glad you’re feeling better so you can enjoy this amazing opportunity!

I think you’re absolutely right to look forward to networking, there’s only so much you can learn by sitting still and just listening to people talk. The real benefit is interaction. You talking to people that you admire, or can learn from and teach something to, and build contacts and relationships- that is the true heart of business. You’re a smart man to recognize that.

Jetlag is the ailment of the modern and successful business man. It’s a good sign, you’re going places. :) Coffee and/or redbull in the morning, and benadryl or nyquil at night always works for me.

It really is just about finding the perfect concoction or cocktail that works for you. Even an actual cocktail, which it sounds like you tried that already! Whiskey and Rum are my sleepy drinks. That’s what I use.

Ouch for the Jetlag, that sucks man. I’ve never been able to time my sleep schedule to avoid it. I think it’s more art than science…

Hey isn’t there an electronics exhibition going on in Vegas this week too? I heard something about it on the radio. Either way, you’re a lucky guy!
