Abundance vs. Scarcity Mentality

Generally, when we talk about scarcity in relationship to blogging we’re talking about using scarcity to create a sense of urgency, to encourage buyers to get off the fence and buy it now. However, in this case, we’re going to talk about how an abundance mentality vs. a scarcity mentality effects you, as a blogger.

When you try to picture your blog in your head you compare it to a small boutique at the local shopping center, where the proprietor considers himself lucky if he has 10,000 people walk through the door each month. Your traffic pool is limited to a specific geographic area and you have five or six competitors in town, all of you fighting over one pie.

But the Internet is a completely different marketplace. It’s so large it’s impossible to imagine and your customer base includes everyone in the world. And what’s really confusing is that your competitors are also all over the world, but at the same time you’re all really sharing the same space.

The idea that you have to try to beat your Internet competitors into the ground so you can have their share of that pie is called “Scarcity Mentallity.” You think there’s a limited amount of traffic available and if you don’t get it someone else will. But nothing could be further from the truth.

The Internet marketplace is so huge you will never, no matter how hard your work, be able to reach every single person on line. It just won’t happen. In reality, you won’t even scratch the surface. Your competitors are all in the same boat. You can literally bring in millions of visitors each month and there will still be plenty of business for all of you.

Once you realize this, you’ll begin to realize that maybe it’s not such a good idea to try to annihilate the competition. In fact, it might be a better idea to work together so you can both reach a larger audience. And even if you do, you still won’t be making a dent in that pie. Because that pie just continues to grow.

Once you can finally grasp the idea that the Internet marketplace just continues to grow then you can see how developing an abundance mentality can help your business grow as well. There’s plenty to go around. In fact, there’s more than you can every hope to reach. Instead of trying to take down your competitors, build them up.

Link out to other bloggers and don’t be afraid to tell your readers that your competitor has a really great idea. Quit being afraid that someone’s going to beat you to that pie, because that pie just keeps on growing. You might have 100 visitors a week and your competitor might have another 100. Neither one of you is making a dent, working on your own. But together you can do amazing things.

Let go of that scarcity mentality. There is no way you’ll ever be able to snag up all the business and keep it for yourself. But when you adopt an abundance mentality and start working with your competitors, then the sky’s the limit.

    Could not agree more! Years ago my dad used to get together almost daily in his small 10×12 office with some of his competitors. They were road sales guys and some of these guys were his best friends. They were all fierce competitors in the garage equipment (lifts, lathes, tire machines) but they all knew there was plenty of business for every one. The stories were always great!
