7 Reasons Why You Might Never Be Productive

When I first started blogging it seemed like I worked my fingers to the bone every day and never made any progress. At the end of the day it seemed like I either didn’t get any work done or the work I did accomplish didn’t help to move by business forward at all. I spent a lot of time analyzing my business and I’m going to share with you the top seven reasons you might never be productive.

productivity tips for bloggers

You Don’t Prioritize

In the beginning it’s really hard to make that transition from employee to business owner. Somebody else has always told you what to do, what time you have to be at work, how long you have to work, and when you can take a break. As a business owner now you have to make your blog, your business, a priority and only you can do that.

You’re Not Organized

Again, when you were punching that time clock somebody else was telling you what to do in order to keep the business running. Now, everything about your business is up to you. You have to schedule your time to maximize productivity, which means you need to stay organized.

You Don’t Learn From Your Mistakes

If you’re frustrated about your blogging business have you ever actually sat back and analyzed it? You know that old saying – If you keep doing the same old thing you can expect to get the same old results. Every business owner makes mistakes every day of the week. The successful business owner learns from those mistakes and plots a different course to keep his business moving forward.

You Feel Entitled

It doesn’t matter how hard you think you’re working there’s someone out there working even harder. You are not entitled to succeed any more than the next guy, so come down off your pedestal, roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty. You are the only one responsible for your own success – or failure.

You Don’t Take Care Of Yourself

It may look easy but blogging is a pretty tough business. Sitting in front of a computer all day long, trying to write something that sounds intelligent, connecting with other bloggers and your readers, running a business – at the end of the day you’re just as tired and worn out as you were when you were punching a time clock. You need to remember to take care of yourself. Get a good night’s sleep, eat healthy foods and take time for exercise to keep your mind sharp and your body healthy.

You’re Easily Distracted

Maybe you’re not being productive because you’re easily distracted. If you always have Facebook, email, and your favorite chat program open then no wonder you’re not getting anything done. Close all windows, shut down all chat programs, and only check your email at the end of the day.

You’re Afraid To Succeed

As I said in the beginning, I spent a lot of time analyzing my business when I first started blogging. And while I was able to attribute my lack of productivity to all the items I’ve listed on this page, I was surprised to learn that the biggest reason I wasn’t moving my business forward was because I was afraid to succeed. It’s a common reaction when you transition from being an employee to a business owner and you might feel this way, too, without even realizing it.

It’s scary to think that you might actually be able to build your own successful business. There’s no one you can blame if something doesn’t work. But even more important, what if it does work? What happens next? Was it a one time thing? What do you need to learn now? Can you repeat it? Can you scale it? You have no experience running your own business and each step closer to success means you’re also taking another step into the unknown.

In any business, even the smallest successes lead to more questions, especially if you want to keep growing. Some bloggers actually sabotage their own success so they don’t have to face those questions. If you find yourself suddenly ignoring your blogging responsibilities then ask yourself why. It might just be that you’re afraid of success. And it’s been my experience that when you start feeling that way, success is just right around the next corner.
