When you first start blogging you’re going to get all kinds of advice: You need a Pinterest account! You need to join such-and-such affiliate network! You need to buy THIS! You need to do THAT! If you made a list of every single goal someone else said you should have you’d never stop writing. Here are the five real blogging goals that I feel are worth putting at the top of your list of priorities.
Building an email marketing list
While marketing methods have changed there’s still no denying the importance of having a targeted email marketing list. We work online and email is the only way we can contact our followers. Whether it’s an RSS email list that you can broadcast to or you generate a list using Aweber or iContact, it’s important to start generating this list from the very beginning and never stop adding to it.
You don’t have to use this list strictly for blasting out links to a sales page. In fact, you really shouldn’t. You can use it for newsletters, polls, or just to announce an important blog post. Emails also allow you to reach out and connect with people who might not be visiting your blog as frequently as they did when they first found it.
Building RSS followers
I go back and forth in my own mind about the importance of RSS subscribers, but I do think it’s a good goal to have, especially if you include it in your marketing plan.
Monitor your RSS subscriptions to see who’s reading your feeds and who isn’t. Then let your readers know, via a blog post, that you’re including exclusive information in your feeds and it’s only available to your RSS subscribers. Next, let your subscribers know that if they’re not reading your feed at least once a month you’re going to drop them to make room for someone who will.
Monitoring your RSS feed, and letting your readers know you’re monitoring it, keeps the interest level up and brings those followers who might be slacking off back to your blog.
Widening your social reach
You can never have too many friends or followers – as long as their targeted. Set goals for your social networks. Once you see a good amount of traffic coming from one, join another. And fine ways to bring your existing followers along with you. Always work on increasing your social reach.
Creating your own products
You’re always going to have competition, no matter what you’re promoting. But you’ll have less competition if you’re promoting your own products or services. Most bloggers start out promoting some type of affiliate offer and some make a lot of money at it. But if you really want to grow your business you should develop your own products.
These products could be info-products like ebooks, but you can also sell your own physical products online. Just take a look at sites like Etsy or Ebay.
Developing your brand
Never stop working on building your brand. When someone sees the name of your blog or your logo you want them to instantly know what that name or logo stands for – like Pepsi or Nike. That means you’re going to have to get out there in the social networks, network with other bloggers, guest blog, publish an ebook or two and whatever else it takes to brand your business into the minds of people all over the Internet.
